in the A • spotlight "Measure for Measure" The extraordinary dark comedy "Measure for Measure," one of William Shakespeare's less frequently seen plays, will make its encore appearance as part of "The Shakespeare Plays" on Monday, August 10 on PBS." Set in a corrupt and brawling Vienna, "Measure for Measure" tells the sto™ of a peculiar attempt at moral reform undertaken by Duke Vincentio (Kenneth Colley), Vienna's ruler. Pretending to leave Vienna on a journey, he appoints a deputy to rule in his place--Angelo (Tim Pigott-Smith), a supposedly upright man "whose blood is very snow-broth. The Duke assumes a friar's habit and secretly remains in the city. Once in power, one of Angelo's first acts is to enforce the ancient law prohibiting pre-marital sex by_cpndemn- ing Claudio (Christopher Strauli) to death. Hearing of Claudio's death sentence, his chaste sister, Isabella (Kate Nelligan, pictured with Tim Pigott-Smith), about to enter a convent, returns to Vienna to plead for her brother's life. Angelo falls in love with the beautiful Isabella, and tries to strike an unholy bargain with her: If she will sleep With him, he will free her brother. The Duke, meanwhile, discovers the plight of the brother and sister, and resolves the conflict through an involved, secrej plot, tricking and finally exposing Angelo for what he tpily is. The production also stars John McEnery as -GtetSdio's friend Lucio. "Measure for Measure" was directed by Desmond Davis. Executive producer for "The Shakespeare Plays" was Cedric Messina.
