The key thing to watch for is any type of behavior which is not normal for that animal. If you see a stray animal and have reason to suspect rabies, you should im mediately report the animal to the local Animal Control office in your area. Do not try to capture or restrain the animal. If a suspicious animal does bite or scratch you, the wound should im mediately be thoroughly cleansed with soap and water, and a physician should be contacted. There is a period between the exposure and the con tracting of the disease when immunity can be built up. This time lag makes it possible for exposed persons to be vaccinated for rabies before they actually develop the disease. Rabies. This dreaded disease is becoming more and more of a problem. What can be done to stop it? How can it be avoided? In I960, Illinois had 524 confirmed cases of rabid animals - an all time high. And this year we are more than 23 percent ahead of this time last year. The state health department is especially concerned about the increased incidence of rabies in domestic animals this year, because people have more contact with domestic animals than with wild animals. Each year rabies vaccine is provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health to 200-300 persons who may have been exposed to rabies. These people had been bitten or scratched by suspected or confirmed rabid animals or had considerable contact with the saliva of such animals. Your family should be taught to stay away from all wild animals and strange domestic pets. An animal with rabies often ex periences a complete per sonality change. A wild animal that normally avoids people may begin to act quite friendly and appear in such as a skunk or raccoon, it should be sacrificed at once and sent to the laboratory for rabies examination. For more information concerning rabies vaccine for humans, contact the Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Disease Control, 535 W. Jefferson, Springfield, 111. 62761. THOUGHT FOR FOOD • y Q O U L D C R O O K WEEKEND CROSSWORD If a dog or cat bites a person, it should be confined and observed for 10 days under the supervision of a veterinarian. If the dog or cat shows signs of rabies during that period, it should be sent to the laboratory and tested for rabies. If the animal is proven rabid, persons bitten or scratched by the animal should start the rabies shots im mediately. Nationally,i; NOW has sponsored walks across the country for the past five years to raise funds and generate interest in the Equal Rights amendment to the Constitution. Because this is the last year the amendment may' be ratified, NOW Officials say this will be the last such walk. "Although this is the last walk nationally, it's also our first in the area," said Fox Valley NOW President Cyndi Lewis-Wolfram. "We ex pected good response, but we're getting a much higher level of participation than we thought." More than 100 local men, women and children have signed up for the 10-kilometer (6.2 mile) walk, joining about 500,000 walkers across the country. Each of the walkers has recruited sponsors to pledge donations for each kilometer walked. The route starts at Tower park in West Dundee at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 23, after a 12:30 rally. Among speakers at the rally will be State Rep. Jill Zwick (R-33), who has called the Equal Rights amend ment "completely logical and just..totally in keeping with the American ideal of 'individual* rights." Growing local concern about the amendment has been responsible for the s u r p r i s i n g a d v a n c e registration, according to Ms. Lewis-Wolfram. "We're seeing a lot of people from Elgin, Wood stock, Crystal Lake, Dundee and Carpentersville realize that they don't have much more time to get the Equal Rights amendment passed," she said. "Many of them haven't known what they could do to support it, and jumped on the chance to do something that could be a visible contribution." "Illinois walkathons are a reminder to those politicians who dare to deny women's full equality. Polls show that men's and women's voting preferences differ by as much as 15 percent. Women are voting now on the basis of a politician's stand on the Equal Rights amendment. Women are more deter mined than ever to end discrimination on account of sex. Over and over again, public opinion surveys have shown that over 60 percent of the American public sup ports the Equal Rights amendment. But it's a lot easier for opponents of ERA to get notice," said Ms. Lewis-Wolfram. Since this is the first Fox Valley walk for ERA, local people haven't had a chance to demonstrate their support until this year. "We're really making up for it, though," she said. "People have signed up from as far away as Woodstock, and we're getting whole families walking." Walkers who bring in more than $100 in pledged donations receive a free T-shirt, she says. The rally and walk also commemorate Women's Equality day, Aug. 26, an niversary of the passage of the 19th amendment guaranteeing universal suffrage.
