V- T <" • ROBERT MUSIKflNTOW, Ph.D. psychologist for the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center for McHenry County (Editor's Note: This is another article in the Today's Psychology weekly series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. The topic this week is "Hypnosis".) Hypnosis is an area of psychology about which people have many misconceptions. Most of these misconceptions are the result of hypnotism's un fortunate association with the stage entertainer, and because of these false ideas, many people are fearful of hypnosis. This is an un f o r t u n a t e s i t u a t i o n , however, because in the hands of a qualified prac titioner, hypnosis can be a powerful and useful tool for facilitating growth and change. Just what are some of these misconceptions? One of the most common is the idea that the hypnotist has some special power which allows him to manipulate and control a person against that person's will. There is nothing further from the truth. Hypnosis is best thought of as a cooperative venture, with the hypnotist serving as a guide to enable his client to reach goals which are desired by the client. If the hypnotist makes a suggestion which a client does not want to follow, the client is perfectly able to refuse to cooperate. Another common form is that While in a hypnotic stale a person will lose control of himself and do things which he will regret later. This is not likely to happen as a d e q u a t e c o n t r o l mechanisms exists both in and out of the trace state. While a person may feel free to experience some things while in a trance that he normally might not be able to in the normal waking state, he will not do anything which would be damaging to his personality. Finally, there is the issue of how to choose a competent practitioner. One method is to talk with people who have seen a particular therapist and see whether or not they feel that their experience was beneficial. This, of course, is not always possible as one may not be aware of anyone who has been to a hypnotist. Another approach is to consult the phone book or your local community mental health center. Your best bet will usually be a person who is a qualified mental health practitioner, such as a social worker, p s y c h i a t r i c n u r s e , psychiatrist or psychologist. Such a person has a firm grounding in all aspects of mental health care and so is usually capable of providing the highest quality of ser vice. Lakemoor-Lilymoor Area Margaret Karas 385-4934 The old J. C. Bickler McHenry House at the northwest corner of Riverside drive and Pearl street has been pictured before, bat never with this large a group of people or so many cars. The latter is explained on the postcard which carries this notation, "Automobile Headquarters". The postcard was sent from Spring Grove in 1910 by Maggie (Adams) Hafner to her husband, George, who had just been transferred in his work to Cleveland, Ohio. The card was brought into the Plaindealer office by their son. George A. Hafner, of Olmsted Falls, Ohio, who found it among his belongings and brought It to McHenry on a recent visit. He recalled that the popular McHenry House was once frequented by Bud Fisher, creator of the Mutt & Jeff cartoon strip which appeared for many years tn syndicated form. assault victim receives medical care, crucial evidence such as hair, blood and other physical evidence can be obtained from her body and clothing and then serve to provide support for the court case," said James B. LILYMOORBREAKIN Thursday midnight was a frightening time for the Wayne Meyer family. About five or sue boys broke a window in their guest house, and made repeated attempts to gain entry in the next three hours. Parents, where are your children, especially after c u r f e w ? W e d n e s d a y evening, another lady in Lilymoor was terrified by someone knocking on her window. There must be other forms of "Pleasure" for these young people, besides causing fear and damage in the area. Hie break in at the Meyer's is being in vestigated, and the culprits will be prosecuted. Not only is Tom a deliverer of worth, he is also a chef of note. He did an excellent job in cooking the beef as they wanted it done. Question: When will the members' wives or guests get a taste of your cooking, Tom? COMMUNITY CALENDAR Aug. 22 ~ Cornfest.
