For 20 EARL WALSH" So I Hear rears I have been it the dangers at the 4-way stop at Green and Pearl. Since that corner is one we cross daily, it has been observed. For some reason, some drivers going west on Pearl St. seem to fail to see the stop sign. We were well into the intersection recently when a big car bore down on us. The driver slammed on his brakes and probably said, "What's that darn fool doing in my way?" If he had hit us broadside with that big car, he would have knocked us into the next county. Neighbors of the Orchard Beach Turners are unhappy with the news of that nice couple moving back to their home town of Elgin. Lyle Turner is the one who sent me some prized old St. Patrick's Day cards. We had a great visit at Bustling Bimbo's and plan to continue the reminiscing when they come back to McHenry for a visit. When Ed Doyle came back to McHenry this summer, he decided it has turned into a horn-tootin' town. Ed was stopped at a red. light (looking up at the tall buildings) when the light turned to green. When he didn't start up in three seconds, the driver in back of .him hit the horn with a Ce. When that happens to me, I wish for a signal to light up in back with some snappy wording for the tooter. { The one I liked best was when the gal's car stalled and tiie driver in back really let her have it with his horn. She got out, walked back and said, "If you will go up there and start my car, I will stay here and blow your horn". Following the dictates of the medical staff in my life, it has been my lot to continue out of town treatments that caused me to miss some sports events. An invitation to be carted around the course, with Espar Oja at the controls, to watch the women's golf tourney had to be declined. Had to pass up a trip to Comiskey Park. And also had to say sorry when Barb Weber kept her promise to remind me of the third round of the Men's cham pionship play at McHenry Country Club. Come hell or high water, I'll join Barb next Sunday for the final round. Came across the word alum in a crossword puzzle and was reminded that my father always kept some handy in case he nicked himself while shaving with a straight razor. For me, the job of washing the family car has changed. Years back, we put the car in the shade and tackled the job with a bucket of water and some old rags. Next came a garden hose that simplified the job. Then came prosperity and we bought a sponge and chamois skin to do the job. That was a big deal. It was a real treat to take the gas buggy to Jim Thompson's station where they did a superb job of cleaning both inside and out. That was great until zooming labor costs forced Jim to discontinue that part of his business. Call it progress if you like. Now we pull into an automatic car wash. Alvina has a thought, "If you will wash the rest of the car, I'll do the windows". That idea will take some thinking over. FISH LIKE SHADE No one knows for sure how the sun affects fish except that when it's hot they behave exactly as humans do; they find a cool place with plenty of shade. But that poses an inter esting question. Where can fish find shade on a lake in the middle of day during summer? The answer comes from Mercury outboards* fishing department which claims that man has provided the means, and thereby established a relationship that has mutual benefits. - On hot, sunny days, panfish -- which normally stay out of deep water anyway -- congre gate beneath boat houses, docks, piers and other man- made structures seeking relief from the heat. As the sun traverses the sky, the fish move with the shade, staying under and next to the structure. Anglers can take advantage of this behavior by casting lures alongside docks, under piers. just about any place that offers shade. Marinas discourage fish ing from their docks because of the danger of snagging persons standing nearby, but private boat docks are ideal targets for the angler seeking panfish. In the evening, when the sun nears the horizon and the water begins to cool, bigger fish, such as largemouth bass and catfish, will often take up interception positions near docks. They nope to make a meal out of the sunfish, crappie and shad which are moving out to feed along the shoreline. ONE MINUTE SPORTS QUIZ 1. Who won the PGA Na tional Championship? 2. C. -- More college football will be seen on TV next season as CBS joins ABC in the college telecasting field. Meanwhile, CBS is shaking up its pro football announcers' lineup. The major casualty is Curt Gowdy, now dropped by two networks. Tom Brookshire goes over to play-by-play work and Pat Summerall and Vince Scilly are to be the network's top team. The NCAA received from the two networks about double what had been paid by ABC alone for telecasting college games under the old contract, which reflects the still-escalating price tag of commercial television. Further indication that CBS trying mightily to move up in its telecasting of sports (it caught ABC the past season in the other rat ings) is the report that an offer has gone out to Bobby Knight, coach of the I n d i a n a ' s b a s k e t b a l l Hoosiers, to join the network for basketball telecasts. CBS' move into college football telecasting and other s p o r t s i n n o v a t i o n s a n d changes indicate that net work hopes to close in on ABC as a leader in sports telecasting. For fans, this competition is welcome.
