*AO< U in the spotlight Profile Australian-born Rick Springfield, who recently joined the cast of ABC-TV's "General Hospital" to portray surgeon Noah Drake, is an award-winning international rock star as well as an actor. His current single, "Jessie's Girl," is topping the charts. Rick is the younger of two sons of Lt. Col. Norman James Springfield, Member of the British Empire, and Eileen Louise Springfield, who now reside in Melbourne. While growing up on army bases in Australia and England, Rick was influenced by his brother, Michael, a television actor at the time, to try acting himself. He became interested in music while the family was living in England, where Rick attended Goldsworth High School in Woking near London for three years. After returning to Australia, he was graduated from Ashwood High School in Melbourne. He started to play guitar and piano in his mid-teens and joined four friends to form The Jordy Boys Band. After a year of entertain­ ing U.S. troops in Vietnam with Rock House, a rock 'n' roll show band, he gained gold records and awards including a citation as Best Guitar Player in Australia during two years with The Zoot prior to starting a solo career. The first solo hit for Springfield, who had begun songwriting while with The Zoot, was an original, "Speak to the Sky" that reached the top spot in Australia, number five in Japan, and brought him an offer to go to the United States to sign with . Capitol Records, in London, he recorded his first album, Begin­ nings, that included a remake of "Speak to the Sky." The single, released in the United States, reached the Top 15 in 1972. His other albums are Comic Book Heroes, Wait for Night and the RCA Records release, Working Class Dog. With the release of his third album, Springfield made his professional acting debut on television in "The Six Million Dollar Man" while under a' one-year contract with Universal Studios. Studying acting with Malcolm McDowell, Jack QarlMh and Vin­ cent Chase, he began to accumulate other TV credits, including "Wonder Woman," "California Fever," "Turnabout," "The « Rockford Files" and "The Incredible Hulk." He also performed in the "Battiestar Galactica" pilot, wrote a song for an episode of "The Eddie Capra Mysteries" in which he also acted, and played a role in "The Young and the Restless." Jean cocteau's "The Human Voice" encores on Great Performances Jean Cocteau's solo tour de force, "The Human Voice," starring internationally renowned actress Liv Ullmann (pictured), returns to public television on Great Performances' summer series Sunday, September 6.* Liv Ullmann stars as a despondent woman who tries vainly to communicate with her former lover in this mov­ ing version of the French playwright's dramatic phone monologue. The drama is a projection of intense emo­ tion and a gripping journey into one woman's mind. When Miss Ullmann enacted this virtuoso piece on stage in Australia and New York, directed by Jose Quintero, critics hailed her performance as "spellbin­ ding," "transfixing'r and "magical." Newsweeks Jack Kroll termed it "an extraordinary special event" in which the actress "used every inch of the stage and every nuance of her voice to express the anguish and despera­ tion of a betrayed lover." Renowned and respected for her acting ability, Ms. Ullmann is also an author and an outspoken public speaker. A Norwegian, born in Tokyo and raised in Canada, the actress has appeared in such great female roles as Juliet, Ophelia, Anne Frank, St. Joan and Katherine in "I Remember Mama." She is a member of the King's Honorary Order of St. Olav for outstanding ar­ tistic and human achievement, and the only woman to win the Peer Gynt Statuette in recognition of her role as Norway's best ambassador.
