STAFF PHOTO-WAYNE GAY LORD VFW Auxiliary Places High In Hospital Work Doris Homann, Mattoon, 111., state president of the Ladies auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign.., visited the 5th &stricti, Ladies auxiliary meeting which was held in Antioch recently. Mrs. Homann stated the state of Illinois placed high in the nation for hospital work. This she learned at the National Veterans of Foreign Wars and auxiliary convention which was held in Philadephia, Pa. She urged members to attend Illinois day. at the Veterans of Foreign Wart National home in Eaton Rapids, Mich., which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2. Mildred Cameron, Elgin, Junior past president of the 5th district, Ladies auxiliary, presented awards and citations which had been announced at the depart ment convention. Lillian Nielsen, Car- pentersville, membership < chairman outlined the 1981- 82 membership program. The theme will correspond with the state membership program. Members of the Ladies auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4600 who attended the meeting were Gerry Kuck, president and deputy chief of staff for the 5th district; Ila Hogan, 5th district,, treasurer and Department of Illinois, co- chairman at Veterans Administration* medical center of North Chicago; Eva Snell, 5th district banner bearer; and Mary Kuemmel, color bearer for the 5th district. Fuel Substitute Lignite pellets that resemble charcoal briquettes like those used in the home barbecue grill are being developed by mechan ical engineers as a possible fuel substitute for manufacturers who normally use large amounts of natural gas or high-grade coal for their business. Un treated lignite, however, is brit tle to the touch and a method must be found to keep the coal from crumbling. Fuel Saver* Gasoline consumption in the U.S. was down 7 percent last year although the number of miles driven declined only 1 percent. Experts expect the trend to continue, mainly be cause of more fuel-efficient cars. Need People To Volunteer The March of Dimes campaign will take $ftace Sept. 21 through the 27th. The captain for Lakeland Park has called and asked me to help her find volun teers to march, it seems like most people work and are unable to give a few hoyrs of their time. Diane has been making calls the last few weeks and hasn't found anyone to help so far. The weather is still nice the end of September and you could use the exercise from walking a couple of blocks. If you can lend a hand for this very worthwhile cause please call Diane Jones at 385-9197. Any time you can volunteer will be greatly appreciated. GET WELL Marilyn Nystrom is a patient in Loyola university hospital Medical center in Maywood and we send wishes her way for a speedy recovery. CANS 7.25 Last Thursday we hap pened to be outside when Marie the bus driver was getting acquainted with her bus route and we were in vited to board the brand spanking new bus. Looks like Marie won't have to worry anymore about the bus breaking down on those cold winter days. I would .like to remind people to be extra careful of the kids standing at their bus stops: Don't forget that if you approach 4 school bus with its stop sign out you must come to a lull stop and wait till all the children have crossed the street and the driver removes the sign. Tom and Beth Jenkins dance the an niversary waltz on the 4th. Ron and Marilyn Nystrom have another anniversary Sept. 5. Helga and Richard Rroemm Celebrate the'*- anniversary Sept. 7. Congratulations are sent to all of you The McHenry • County Defenders announce that this Saturday, Sept. 5, from 9 a.m. until l p.m. is one of the two regularly scheduled recycling drives held in the city of McHenry for the recycling of newspaper, clean glass bottles and jars, flattened steel cans, used motor oil and aluminum products. Members of Pi Alpha, a service sorority, will be on hand to help unload cars, provide rope to those needing it and prepare the materials for the next step toward being made into useful products again. As of Aug. 1, newspapers are the only paper product that can be accepted at the recycling drives. For the past eight years, the McHenry County Defenders have made it possible to recycle magazines, junk mail, and cardboard materials. A high per centage of roofing shingles, the product in which magazines, etc, were utilized, are now being made of fiberglass. As a result, the paper mills have become more selective and will be purchasing only newspaper from now on. Recyclers are asked to dispose of their magaiznes, cardboard, paper bags and advertising mail through their regular trash pick-up channels. Defender members feel the market for mixed papers as a whole will not open up again. However, there is a possibility that other arrangements may be worked out in the future for cardboard, but for the present, the market is closed. Because of the success of the aluminum pay-back program in encouraging new people to recycle not only the aluminum cans but other recyclable products as well, it has been decided that the pay-back program will be in effect at both the first and third Saturday of each month's recycling drives. Citizens are encouraged to bring in their newspaper, glass, steel cans and used motor oil along.with their aluminum cans. Residents of the McHenry area are reminded that the recycling drives now close at 1 p.m. No material should be WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER 2.1M1 left after that time. Anyone having questions of any kind regarding the drive should call the McHenry County Defenders representative at 38S-8512 before Saturday.
