Some drugs can affect the way your body uses food. Let's have a quiz this week to see how much you know about what has been learned in recent studies of the in­ teraction of foods and drugs. Which of the following statements are "true" and which are "false"? More green leafy vegetables should be eaten if you are on the birth control pill, because the pill depletes the blood's content of certain vitamins Chronic use of antacids can lead to muscle weakness and vitamin D deficiency. As little as two-and-a-half tablespoons of mineral oil taken orally each day can interfere with the absorption of certain vitamins. The long-term use of diuretics, or "water pills", to treat conditions such as congestive heart failure or hypertension can make the heart sensitive to the effects of other drugs, especially digitalis. The use of soda pop or acid fruit or vegetable juices when taking some drugs may cuase them to dissolve quickly in the stomach in­ stead of the intestines where they can be more readily absorbed into the blood stream. Th'e calcium in dairy products impairs absorption of tetracycline, a commonly p r e s c r i b e d a n t i b i o t i c , keeping you from getting the full benefit of treatment. The answer to all of the above is "true". The extent of interaction between foods and drugs depends on the drug dosage and on the individual's age, size, and medical condition. In general, though, the presence of food in the stomach and intestines can i n f l u e n c e a d r u g ' s e f ­ fectiveness by slowing down or speeding up the time it takes the medicine to reach the site in the body where it is needed. Food also contains natural and added chemicals that can react with certain drugs in ways (hat make the drugs virtually useless, and some reactions can be downright dangerous. Nutrient depletion of the body occurs gradually, but if drugs are taken over long periods of time, these in­ teractions can lead to deficiencies of certain vitamins and minerals, especially in children, the elderly and the chronically i l l . What can you do to prevent u n d e s i r a b l e f o o d - d r u g i n ­ teractions? You can read the labels on over-the-counter remedies and the package i n s e r t s t h a t c o m e w i t h prescription drugs. Ask your doctor when to take drugs and what foods or beverages to take or to avoid while taking medication The state health depart­ ment urges you to eat a wide variety of foods, for a drug is less likely to cause depletion of vitamins and minerals if your overall nutritional status is good.
