With all the old time pictures of McHenry, seldom do we see one showing the south side of Main street. This picture was taken from Front street looking west. To the left is Heimer Bros. (later Henry Heimer) saloon, now known a Ye Olde Corner Tap. The Uttle girl standing near the kerosene lamp post is Rose Laures Landgren. Standing near the corner of the building is Adele ••Toots" Heimer Butler. The little tot in the baby buggy is Dorothy Mathews Buchert. The Ed Lusk general store is at the right. The sign points to the Park hotel, which stood where the Overton-Cadillac garage now stands. The Wilbur Lumber Co. building can be seen at the far end of the picture. Note the tank in the foreground for watering horses. Rauen, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mathias J. Kauen of Spring Grove, were united in marriage by the Right Reverend Ignatious Esser, O.S.B. Abbot of St. Meinrad Abby St. Meinrad, Ind. When Jack Miller entered service recently, he was the fifth son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Miller of Ringwood to enter the Armed Forces. He has been at Fort Leonard Wood. Three of them are serving at present, the others being Roman, who is now in Germany, and Donald, stationed at Fort Lewis, Wash. Two others saw duty previously, Alvin, who was in service four years during World War II, and Walter, who was on duty 18 months in Korea. The entire community was saddened late Tuesday af ternoon Sept. 11, when residents learned that the city's oldest resident, Mrs. Gertrude Justen, was dead at 98 In keeping with the strength which had been so characteristic of her throughout her long lifetime, it was not surprising that she was up and about until a half hour before she died. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of Sept. 8, 1971). Doors of 10 McHenry schools opened to welcome a record number of students. In all, there are 5,662 enrolled in classes at all age levels. A burglary which occurred after midnight Labor day resulted in more than $2,000 in equipment stolen at the site of the new courthouse on Ware road and Rt. 47, Woodstock. The new state markings on Elm street, at the in tersections of Front street and Riverside drive, are causing some irritation among motorists. Drivers are responding surprisingly well to huge arrow on the inside lane, indicating all cars in the center lane must turn left. There are definite advantages, but what about all the motorists in parking lots along the way?
