Losing its top three runners to graduation, Marian's cross country team has its work cut out if it expects to attain last year's success. Coach Hans Rokus' harriers finished eleventh in the state last year and hod an overall record of 14-1. Since the two-class system began five years ago, the Hurricanes are the only Class A school to have gone to state four years in a row. Gone from last year's squad are state runner-up Mike Eisele, three time all-stater Paul Sandall, and Brad Gregory another all-state runner. "It will be difficult to replace those three athletes," admitted Rokus. "But we're a very young team with a lot of sophomores and juniors and we have a good nucleus to build on." These are the Hurricanes number four, five, six and seven runners from last year who will be counted on heavily this season. Senior Tom Wottreng is expected, to move up to the number one spot with junior Bob Hartmann running second. The three and four spots will be filled by a pair of sophomores • John Wottreng and Jay Chapman. Tony Wember and Paul Herkes, both of McHenry, will be the other senior runners. Junior harriers w;'i be Tom Wember, Dave Cotteleer, and John Zcoielski. All three are also from McHenry. Other varsity hopefuls include junior Nick Wottreng from Harvard and freshman Yun Kim of Woodstock. Rok»js is hoping that his young team will progress throughout the season and peak in time for state competition. ' Our goal will be to get to state again," stated Rokus. "As the season goes along, our young people should round into shape and we should be fine." Included in last year's record, the Hurricanes won the Kaneland Invitational, were runner-up at the Win nebago Invitational, finished third at the Wauconda invitational, and fourth at the Amboy Invitational, which is considered a mini-state meet. Marian also won the district and finished third at sectionals. •Coach's Corner Originally from Rock- ford, Hans Rokus has compiled an impressive 14-year record at Marian Central as coach of the cross country team. The last four years have been his banner ones as the Hurricanes have finished ninth, fourth, seventh, and most recently eleventh in the state. He has also coached one individual state run ner-up, that being Mike Eisele last year. Rokus attended Nor thern Illinois University where he played both basketball and tennis.
