PAGE 6 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 11,1981 w S- * Miller Wins BALL WASHER? The Plaindealer didn't know whether Chris Wirtz, co-chairman of the McHenry Chamber of Commerce Annual Golf Outing, was just using the creek at McHenry Country Club to wash his golf ball or to take a shower. Co-chairman Tom Miller stated that Wirtz was just getting in some early practice for the big event that will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16. The all day affair includes a longest drive contest and closest to the pin during the 18 holes of golf that will be followed by dinner. Tickets may be purchased at the McHenry Plaindealei and reservations for tee times should be made by phone to Vale Adams at 385-3435 at the McHenry Country Club. ' STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD The Fox , Hole Tap's Twig Miller won the 1981 McHenry 12-Inch batting title with an impressive .703 average. Miller's crown was his second in three years with his average of .995 winning the crown in 1979. Tom Spasojevich was second overall, tope in the West, with a .887 clip. The Fox Hole again took honors as the leading team in batting with a .528 average, 62 points higher than Wayne's .488 average, but 40 points lower than last season. Joe Dehn and Gary Gilpin, both from the Old Bridge, were number one and two in RBI's. Dehn had 38 runs batted while his counterpart drove in 35. Gilpin also led the league with 15 home runs setting a new league record in that category. Wayne's Tom Burke finished in second with 13 roundtrippers followed by teammate Wayne Roewer, who belted 11 out of the park. Wayne Hiller from the Johnsburg Businessmen scored 30 runs to lead in that department. Tom Burke and Doug Freund of the Old Bridge were close behind with 29 each. Doherty's Mike Rogers hit safely 36 times while Joe Dehn was right behind with 35 base hits to lead in that category. In doubles Chuck Marke from King's Row led with 10 while (Johnsburg's) Tom Spasojevich hit 9 two taggers. Johns burg's Tim Frantz, Doherty's Irish DeCiccio and Mike Rogers all led in the triples department with 4 each. Wayne's won easily over Rusty Nail Inn 15-0 to wrap up that series. In the second round to begin Monday, Johnsburg will play Fox Hole Tap in the first and third games, and Wayne's will play Doherty's in game two. (Highlights of Wednesday's games will be in next week). Pat Wirtz On The Sideline With Dick Rabbitt Coach Joe Schlender will take his McHenry Warriors to Stevenson high school tomorrow to open the 1981 football season The Warriors have been working hard all week to take out the rough spots that showed up in last Saturday's scrimmage. Kickuff time is 2 p.m. with the sophomores getting under way at noon. Chuck Hilda's golfers lost a tough one to Antioch last week With tour of* his golfers shooting 40 or better, the veteran coach is going to be tough once the boys get more playing time. They along with Crystal Lake South should battle it out for conference and district honors this year. To pick a Fox Valley football champion this season is going to take some effort. Last year Cary Grove came out of the pack and went undefeated, but the loss of all stater Neil Britt will put the Torjans back in the pack this year. Crystal Lake Central with the veteran Bill Mack at the helm has to be one of the favorites. He has 14 lettermen returning, and experience in the skill positions. The Tigers are always a tough defensive club and this year should be no exception. The favorite for the past three season the Blue Streaks of Bob Bradshaw, will again be in contention, but lack of depth is a main concern for the Streak mentor Although not as talented as in veu ~ past, the Streaks do have a fine football program and u.H bt n th< thick of the race. Crystal Lakp has si/'; a ic peed this year Coach Bob Hight hopes to have a high scoring offense, that was the trademark of the Gators last season. With seven lettermen returning and an undefeated sophomore team to rely on, the Gators can make some waves this season. According to most of the coaches the sleeper this year mav be Crown. Coach Bob Carlson, a former Woodstock high athlete now in his third year at the helm of the Vikings, has 23 lettermen returning. The Vikes have good size, but not too much speed. All they need is a couple of early season wins under their belt, and they could make it interesting for some teams. Dundee under new coach Gene Mitz formerly at Northwestern university is going to find the Fox Valley as tough for his Cards as the Wildcats found in the Big 10. They just don't have the horses to be in contention for the league crown. Jacobs was winless last year after winning the championship in 1979. The Golden Eagles with 15 lettermen returning should show some improvement. Pre-season injuries have not helped the Eagles, but they have~no place to go but up this season. The Warriors of Joe Schlender will be a representative team. Inexperience at the quarterback spot is still a question mark. Doug Mullen, a senior, has not played the game before. Once he gets some game experience under his belt, he can be a good one. He can throw with the best of them, and last Saturday in the scrimmage time and time again hit his man on the numbers. With a fairly good size line, but an entire new backfield this season, it may take the Warriors a couple of games to get going this season. One thing you can be sure of, they will be in good cpndition. It is time for the old Crystal ball to come out of mothballs, so I'll start out with Stevenson defeating our Warriors in a close one. Woodstock to beat Mundelein, Marengo to outscore Jacobs, Crown in another thriller to defeat Lake Zurich, Grayslake to beat Dundee, Central to win over Antioch, South to beat Conant, Cary to defeat Wauconda, Grant over Johnsburg, and St. Ed's over Marian Central. McHENRY, II. 3t5-0420 Plaindealer Defense Leads Hornets' Win The McHenry Hornets varsity football team began its season with an im pressive 13 0 shutout over St. Mar.* s of Woodstock last Sunday. A strong ground game and a stingy defense were the two big plusses for the Hornets McHenry ac cumulated 143 yards of total offense in the contest and scored both touchdowns on the ground In the first quarter, John Diedrich scored what proved to be the margin of victory on a 14 yard sweep around end. With the extra point successful, the Hornets made their 7-0 lead stand up through the second quarter and into halftime. Mike Schultz tallied the final score for McHenry in the fourth quarter on a one yard plunge. The extra point attempt failed, but the 13 points were more than enough as St. Mary's found it almost impossible to move the ball all afternoon. In the first half, Woodstock had a total of minus 10 yards total offense. In the second half they improved that total to a plus 27 giving them 17 total yards on the afternoon. Much of the credit for this is due to the swarming defensive line which had seven sacks on the day. Jim Shaver, in particular, registered five of those sacks for losses totaling 18 ya^d|S -"Our entire defense played extremely well," said coach Phil Thorne. "We really shut them down, but if we hadn't had so many turnovers of our own the score would've been a lot higher." The Hornets fumbled the ball away three times, once as they were driving for a score on the St. Mary's fdur yard line. The junior varsity squad didn't find the same success losing its opener 13-6. The Hornets took a 6-0 lead late in the second quarter when Mark Davidson took a lateral from Joel Pagose and raced 65 yards for the score. Two minutes later, however, St. Mary's in tercepted a pass and went on to score making it 7-6 Woodstock at halftime. McHenry failed to muster up enough offense in the second half for a go-ahead touchdown, but Woodstock tallied once again in the third quarter to conclude the scoring. Roth the varsity and the junior varsity Hornet squads will open up their regular seasons on Sunday, Sept. 13 against the Antioch Vikings at McCracken field. The jayvee game will begin at 12:45 p.m. with the varsity tilt to follow at ap proximately 2:00 p.m. McHenry senior Chris Knox fires one over the net In Wednesday night's contest against Belvidere. The number two singles player, Julie Larkin, lost in straight sets 6-2, 6-3 to Jeannie Gang. Kelli Williams was the only girl to chalk one up in the win column as she defeated Anne Reisdorf in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in number three singles. Kregeen and Switzer were both state qualifiers for Belvidere last year. In the number two doubles match, Kris Sorting and Laurie Campbell were beaten 6-1, 6-2 by Kathy Williams and Lori Nimocks. Gray, nonetheless, feels that his team will do a lot better considering that this was the first match of the season. "WJien we get some expereince We'll be alright," he said.
