His mother said he was too old for Pioneer Day Care Pi0fferRe"hab Before hte Dad'» Hgoingi2 "work" with him every day.^But with his death, he was off each day to stay with a family friend or his sister so Mom could keep her job Evenings were spent in front of the TV with a tearful mother. Then last November Mom decided it would be better for [J®!® ** in_a residential home with others he could call his friends. But she could find no place that would accept him, or where he would "fit in". Mom found that while county facilities exist for many of we handicapped who could care for themselves, there was nothing tor the profoundly retarded. And she was well aware that a profoundly retarded adult is a 24-hour-a-day responsibility. 7 ••You can't just hire the teenager down the street to babysit. Most teenagers are 'turned off, afraid or bored with a retarded person," she observed. Mom had heard of Jeannette Gacek's Windsong Acres Teen club from a friend, but thought Jackie was too old and too retarded. However, when desperation set in, she called. She didn't try to hide the truth about her son, and Mrs. Gacek admitted she wasn't sure he would fit into the club But she was willing to give him a chance. "I'D never forget that first meeting" Mom said, when she (Mrs. Gacek) said, 'Leave him here and go have some time out for yourself - shopping or whatever you want, we 11 bring him home in a couple of hours'. It was the first time alone without ^ferrying about him in six months. ™ "Only a parent of a handicapped child can fully know how wonderful it was," Jackie's Mom commented with enthusiasm. "Since then he has become a real teen clubber. Outings at least mice a week, usually two or three times a week. Time out for Mom - wow!" She continued, "Jeannette's wonderful teen age children watched him all day this summer while I worked. And when Jackie's older brother was killed thi« summer, she called and said to pack Jackie a bag, they were coming to get him. Ke stayed night and day for the better part of that month and so was spared the grief and pain of another family death. The most important thing that has happened is that Jackie has, in his mother's words, "come alive again". He beams from ear to ear when the Gaceks and Windsong Acres are mentioned. He hurries to get showered, shaved and dressed to go to Teen club. Jackie has that old feeling of a big happy family again. "They have no need for drugs, alcohol or street gangs, they are too busy making the teen club kids happy", Mom spoke admiringly of the Gacek children. "Somehow this love has to continue and grow", this McHenry Mom concluded. "Too many kids who don't fit into any other picture are depending on the Gaceks. It is a new and unique thing they are doing. God must be proud of them, and he will help them to continue. But he needs some down-on-earth help too. "Right now they need some cold hard cash. They have spent so much of their personal cash on the kids because some of the parents couldn't afford more than a dollar a week. "They need a place to live in McHenry county to continue with these kids. Only money will get it for them." (The Gaceks were evicted from their Crystal Lake property at 6303 Hillside road last week. They are hoping to purchase property near McHenry to continue their non profit teen club for the handicapped.) PQElfIrn f J CORNER I The children play Without a sound, Silent revelations. Campus Mailing Tips Whether or not it is the traditional "Dear Dad, please send cash," mail means a lot to students away at college, particularly those who will be leaving home for the first time this fall. . Postmaster Leroy Smith jflffers these suggestions to assure problem-free mail delivery to those changing to campus addresses: Let your home post office know your college address as soon as possible. All your first class mail will be for warded without charge. Get a free change-of- address kit at the po6t office, and use it to let your correspondents know your new address - especially newspapers, magazines, clubs and other regular mailers. If you move during the school year, notify the college mailroom and the post offices at home and at school, as well as your correspondents. If you have a separate mailbox at your residence, make sure it's identified with your name. If you live in an apartment, fraternity, sorority or rooming house, clearly indicate where your mail is to be distributed. During holidays and recesses, you may arrange with the post office to hold your mail, have someone at PAGE 15 • PLAIN DE ALER - FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER ».
