Some of these "benefits' are l isted inPsalm 103:1-5. It is my firm conviction that, everything else being equal, the contented believer in Christ wil l l ive longer, feel better, and enjoy l i fe far more, in every wholesome way, than his neighbor who doesn t fear the Lord, nor trust His dear Son. Home life is far more congenial for the Redeemed of the Lord, that is, i f they allow the love of God to rule in their hearts and l ives. Thank the Lord for all His fr inge benefits . That was how she affected me, and that was how she affected most people. The crowds who showed up to honor her and say goodbye to her on Tuesday and Wednesday felt tl|e way I did. A lot of thltm were people who knew htr since she was a little girl growing up in this village. Then there were those who met her for the first time during her Junior year in high school when she started working for the Village of McHenry Shores. It was a difficult, responsible job but she handled it well in spite of her extreme youth, not only efficiently but with never changing friendliness and helpfulness. Since July, 1980, she worked as a dispatcher for the Algonquin Police Department. How much friendship, love and devotion she inspired could be seen on Tuesday and Wednesday when officials, her colleagues from Algonquin and personnel from many other police departments from near and far came to pay her their last respects, when, on her last journey, she received a police escort worthy of a queen. We always knew she was loved but we never realized how much until this magnificent display. It could not dispel the shock and grief we felt at the tragic accident that took her young life, but it made us even prouder to have known her. Goodby to Chris! We love her and will miss her for a long time to come. Our condolences go to Aldona and Leon Zelvis as well as Chris's brother and sisters. May the Lord stand by them in their bereavement! MARCH OF DIMES This is the week the Marching Mothers of America (and a few fathers, too, I am told) will knock on your door to ask for donations for the March of Dimes. Can you imagine the initial despair of parents first realizing that their child was born with a birth defect? The angry questions - Why did it happen to me, to my child? The guilt feelings - Is it my fault? Have I done something I shouldn't? Have I failed to do something? Can you also picture the relief of such parents when they realize that there is help for their child? And could there be anything more gratifying, more inspiring that seeing a child who at first seemed doomed to a life of helplessness or depen dence become a healthy, self-sufficient person? How much more despair can be turned into hope, depends solely on you. If you have ever felt grateful for the help your child has received or, even more so, for having a healthy child, show your appreciation and give generously to this beautiful cause. Our children are our future, and we need every single one of them to help make this world a better place for us and them! Please remember that when a marcher comes to your door! PERSONNEL CHANGES There will be some changes at the village hall in the near future. The first one has already taken place. Chris Foote, for three years secretary and ad ministrative assistant, has left the employment of the village as of Sept. 11. No new appointment has been made, but applications are being reviewed by the president and the Board of Trustees. Let me take this op portunity to wish Chris who, in spite of a lot of personal misfortunes, did a beautiful job and found a lot of friends during her stay, nothing but the very best for her future. BIRTHDAYS Sept. 23 was Tammy Gunder's twentieth bir thday. Bonnie Panerali will celebrate hers on the 27th, and on the same day my best friend, Joe Einweck, will be seven years old. On Sept. 28, Matthew Grass has his eighth bir thday, and Tuesday marks the special celebration of a very special lady, - Helen Crouch. "Happy Birthday"! R-VALUE Don't shop for inches of insulation; it's the R-value that counts. "R" stands for resistance and measures the insulation's ability to resist the flow of heat from a warm room to the cold out side. Ask your local utility or county extension office for help in determining what R-value you need. JOIN US SUNDAY MORNING AS WE MEET TO STUDY THE BIBLE. S«OfC& Stu Q)c*vptine6 f Raymond T. CONSUMER ^CHECKLIST Editor's note: This is another in a series of especially written articles for McHenry County readers. Joseph Cools is a psychologist on the Family Service and Community Mental Health Center staff. This article is "Coping - Adjusting to Change". Many people, when given a substantial promotion or an inheritance, or are faced with any event or series of events that are very positive in their life, experience an unaccountable feeling of depression or dissatisfac tion. The thought that one could become depressed after a positive change is so ludicrous that even the person experiencing the depression will attempt to deny to himself that he is feeling that way. The reason for the depression makes perfect sense, however. The key word is "change" - change means making an ad justment, putting a strain on the organism. It really does not matter if the change is positive or negative; the fact JOHN L FREUND FREUND FUNERAL HOMES •WONDER LAKE 7611 HANCOCK DR. 815-728-0233 COOPER-FREUND •MARENGO 205 N. STATE 815-568-7345 is, the change requires people to alter their life style or thinking. It requires a drastic shift and adjustment. A study performed several years ago gave a weighted score to significant life changes (e.g., marriage had a high score, death of a close family member had a high score; taking a vacation or getting a traffic ticket have a low score). If the "score" of changes reached a certain level in any twelve month period, depression occurrred with 100 percent certainty. Obviously, just knowing that change is difficult to adjust to, does not prevent depression, but it can make the symptoms more un derstandable, and thus easier to cope with. If you can accept the fact that change even in a positive direction is difficult, it can make you feel less guilty and less "obligated" to feel happy. While there is nothing we can do to avoid changes imposed on us by unexpected sources (death, fire), we can be aware if we have had a great number of significant changes recently and can choose to not undertake more really significant changes until we have had time to adjust to the old changes. For example, many people who lose their spouse through death decide to sell their house immprtiatply and move into a smaller place. Such a drastic change puts even more stress on the person and will undoubtedly prolong the adjustment period. * * * * At the end of this happy life, the man with the most money will find it means very little. • * * » Every minority has a tendency to blame the majority for its own mis takes.
