PAGE 8 - PLAINDEALER - WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30. EARL WALSH' So I Hear A late phone call Friday night brought good news. Wilbert Hecht "rang us up" to tell us our Warrior football team beat Crystal Lake South. He was high on the team performance. For a team some experts didn't rate very high, Coach Schendler's Warriors look mightv good with a 3-0 record. We know in any sport you win some and lose some, but a good start has pleased the fans Just read about couples being married by computer. Now they can get married during their lunch hour and get right back to work. When our door bell rang, I said, "Who comes there?" "One of Earl's Girls", came the reply from Sharon Klontz It was a pleasant visit with Sharon and Brian, who now reside in Colorado. It isn't often that I print a full letter, but this one from a gal who was raised or reared in McHenry will be of interest to many of the natives. Waukegan, Illinois September 16,1981 Dear Earl - Don't know if you will remember me or not. I was the "little girl" that lived down the street and you were always telling me "to go home and tell my mother she wanted me". Nick Miller gave me a bundle of old Plaindealers- spent one afternoon and evening going through them Your column was the only one outside of a few obituaries, that I recognized a name. I was sad to see McGee's clothing store had closed- like our down town - it is no more. See where my old friend Huppy Schoewer passed away, as did a classmate Louise C. Kennebeck. Was a bit envious when I read about the Class Reunions. The Class of 1927 never had one. Shame! Visited Dick and Berteel Stenger in Lake San Marcos a year ago Same Dick and Berteel. Called on May Justen Wondra in her lovely new home in Tryon, N.C. last fall. Beautiful part of the coun try. See Fern Bacon Mitchell every Sunday at church. Fifty years is a long time to be gone from your Home Town Come back now and not a thing looks familiar. Had dinner at the China Light one day - told the folks this was a grocery and meat 1981 market when I lived hare. Do hear from Jean Mat thews, Betty Boger Frett and Floribel Bassett Vogel on special occasions. It is fun to reminisce once in a while. Just wanted you to know I did enjoy your column. Sincerely, Adeline Perkins Matson Dear Adeline - So you wonder if I remember you. Could I forget Jim Perkins' little girl? And wasn't your mother's maiden name Calla Loomis? Friends of hers like Mrs. John (Rose) Miller and Mrs. Will Bacon called her "Callie". Yes. This isn't little old McHenry anymore. It is called progress. It was nice of you to write - - and it would be nice to see you again. Did I really send you home to your mother? S.I.H. B r o a d c a s t e r L o u Boudreau is unhappy with Cub fans who stay away from games in great num bers. Difference is that Lou gets paid to attend games. I'm never sure when a horn blows if somebody is being friendly or if somebody is telling me to get off the road. When I breezed through on the yellow one day, I'm sure the old boy to my left wasn't giving me a blessing. Paul Morenz was a powerful, slam-bang ball carrier on that team. So --here's what hap pened. Paul's parents, Gene and Martha, put on a spaghetti dinner for* the team, coaches, cheerleaders and all connected with the team at that time. The Morenz home wasn't large, but their garage was the answer in ac commodating the crowd, Oh - they had fun! Now, 20 years later, Paul and his wife have purchased that same Morenz home and they plan the same kind of party. Invitations have been sent to participants and their spouses. Cliff Fulton was head basketball coach. He and his wife are coming, (didn't Cliff help in football, too?) A very important person has been invited. Ms. Rita Wolbert taught math in our school and is credited by the players with pulling them through. She spent evenings helping the boys with their problems. A real dedicated teacher was Ms. Wolbert. This repeat party will be held Friday night, Oct. 2. A surprising number of the original cast will be present. (Wanna bet that Mama Morenz will return to the scene with a spoon in the spaghetti making?) Golfers Win One Of Three Marian Central's golf team was busy last week playing three meets in as many days. Lynn Cornwell's team defeated Harvard then lost to non-conference op ponents Crown and Jacobs. Led by seniors Tom Mc- Mahon and Ron Nye who each carded a 48, Marian edged Harvard 197-203 on Monday. The victory marked the second time that Marian topped Harvard this year. Playing Crown at Randall Oaks, McMahon again led the Hurricanes as he shot a 40, but Crown won Tuesday's meet by a narrow 168-175 score. At Pinecrest Wednesday night, Marian was defeated 163-188 by Jacobs McMahon had the low score for the third night in a row as he along with senior Eric Swim Team Loses To Dundee McHenry high school's girt swim team dropped its second meet of the season Thursday as Dundee defeated the Warriors 93-75. It was incorrectly reported last week that the Warriors had won their opening meet against Zion They had lost 100- 66. Monique Betancourt broke a McHenry high school varsity record in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of one minute, tweny-one and seven tenths seconds. Her record had eclipsed the old standard of 1:23.7 which she had set last week against Zion. Coach Mike Shanahan's swimmers will be off until Tuesday, Oct. 6 when they travel to Schaumburg for a 4:30 p.m. meet. Warriors Win Charlie Cuda's McHenry high school golf team keeps on rolling as the Warriors defeated conference rival Crystal Lake South Thur sday night 152-155. Senior Mike Nank paced McHenry as he fired a 36. Kirk Barnicle and Brad Adams followed with 38's each and Tom Neumann carded a 40 while Steve Svec had a 41. -- , After hotting Dundee on Monday, MMcHenry will travel to Cary on Thursday, Oct. 1 for a 3:30 p.m. meet. The neighborhood bully finally received his comeuppance. And it was the new kid on the block that dished out the punishment as Marian Central upset Hononegah, the perennial Shark power, 23-20 on a rainy Friday night. The Hurricanes, in their first Shark campaign, rallied back from a 20-6 first auarter deficit and won when Scott Spengel kicked a 21-yard field goal with only 13 seconds left in the game. It was the third straight loss for the Indians, who have won four of the last five Shark titles. Marian im proved to 2-1 overall, 1-0 in the league. The Hurricanes are now tied for first with Harvard and will host the Hornets on Saturday af ternoon. Hononegah grabbed a 14-0 lead in the first quarter on a pair of two-yard runs by Mike Ainsworth. Marian struck back later in the first period when quarterback Chuck Hartlieb heaved a 64- yard pass to Jeff Cynchner to cut the lead to 14-6. But the Indians roared right back when Ainsworth ran the kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to give Hononegah a 20-6 lead. Later in the quarter, Tom Pappas ran three yards for another Hurricane score cutting Hononegah's ad vantage to 20-12. The second quarter was scoreless, but it was not without some scoring op portunities. Late in the half, the Indians apparently tallied on an 88-yard run after a fake punt, but it was called back due to penalty. The Hurricanes tied the game in the third period when Hartlieb found Spengel 11 yars away in the end zone and connecterd for a touch down. Pappas then added the two-point conversion to tie the game at 20-20. Staring at the Hopnonegah 45 with 1:20 to play, Hartlieb tossed a 25-yard pass to Cynchner putting the Hurricanes on the Indian 20- yard line. Hartlieb then carried down to the eight for a first down, but Marian stalled on the next two plays. On fourth down and with only 13 seconds left, Spengel booted his game-winning field goal. Marian gained 193 yards in 38 carries, while Hononegah totaled 199 in 36 attempts. In passing, the Hurricanes had 139 yards, while Hononegah managed only 14. Pappas paced the Marian running attack with 64 yards on 13 carries, while Ainsworth was the top Indian runner with 64 yards also. by Jack McCarthy SPORTS BIRTHDAYS Thursday-Rod Carew, 36; Conrad Dobler, 31.
