GARDEN Plants With Traditional and Medicinal Properties Feverfew is an example of an attractive garden plant with a variety of traditional uses. This native of Asia Minor and Eur ope is strongly aromatic. Dried flowers have long been used to allay fevers, as a tincture in insect repellants, and used in the production of wine and tea. The plant grows to about two feet and leaves anytime. Sum mer flowers are borne on short stalks amid much-separated green leaves. The flowers are yellow disks surrounded by white florets. Feverfew is prop agated by seeds planted in ord inary garden soil after danger of frost. Full sunlight is preferable. Foxglove, a more stately gar den plant, also has medicinal properties. Foxglove is a source of the drug, digitalin, a heart stimulant. The plant has no place in home remedies or us age, since it is poisonous in liberal dosage. The plant is na tive to Western Europe, includ ing Britain, where dye made from the leaves is sometimes used to color stonework. Ft Vf KFE W F O X G L O V E A biennial which grows to five feet in height, Foxglove forms leaves the first year. Flowers appear the next spring or early summer, borne on erect, leafy spikes and varying from white to purple. Dark spots appear on the lower inside of the corolla tube. Unlike Feverfew, Foxglove requires moist soil, such as a combination of leaf-mould, loam and sand, and requires frequent watering. -vs- ) ) JAMES P.
