ITEM: A 44-year-old Canton, Ohio man was fat&lfy shocked while he stood in his swimming pool, Cleaning it with a broom. His arm, officials said, ap parently made contact with an electrical filter. ITEM: A 15-year-old Wayne, Ind., boy was electrocuted when the old power drill he was using shorted out. ITEM: A 32-year-old man was electrocuted when he stepped in a puddle of water while plugging in an ex tension cord in the yard of his Palm Harbor, Fla home. Last year, about 23,000 people died as a result of accidents at home. An estimated 3.5 million others suffered disabling injuries. •According to UL, one' reason for higher home accident statistics is the increased use of power tools outdoors. Most people use power tools infrequently. But warm weather is "do-it- yourself" project time for many people, and electric drills, saws and other tools come out of storage. If they've been improperly stored, power cords might have become cracked or cut, water or cold might have ^damaged the motor or caused deterioration of the insulation. Any tool or ap pliance that has not been used frfr several months should be checked out first 4q make sure it's safe to operate. And, of course, electrical products should not be used outdoors when it's raining or irv. wet locations. That seems like an obvious precaution but, surprisingly, some people apparently overlook the danger. Perhaps a person is just finishing up a project and needs to make one last cut with an electric saw as the rain starts to fall; or cut that last section of grass with an electric mower. The risk is forgotten, A good device to have installed on all outdoor electrical outlets and outlets near water are ground fault circuit interruptors (GFCI), UL engineers say. A GFCI looks just like a .regular electrical outlet except that, if there is any dangerous leakage of electrical current, it will cut off the electricity coming from the o\rtlet before a potentially fatkl shock can occur. GFCIs should be installed by a qualified electrician Plug-in models also are now available. Extension cords are another area of concern. UL safety engineers report. Only extension cords ap proved for outdoor use should be used outdoors. This information usually is marked on the packaging and on the cord. It's also very important that the extension cord is rated high enough for the device plugged into it. The rating is either in watts or amperes and usually can be found right on the cord. People should check in struction manuals or the electric equipment's labels for its wattage or ampere rating to make sure it's usable with the extension cord selected Parents should never allow children to operate power tools unless thej^ are properly supervised. The use of power tools requires good judgment and • skill. Power saws can cut down trees, drills can bore through sheet metal and circular saws can split two-by fours. Imagine what these tools can do to a human body. , Properly maintain power tools. In the case of saws and lawnmowers, cutting edges should be kept sharp and clean. Instructions for lubricating and changing accessories should be followed. When using an electric tool, check to see that it's switched off before plugging it in. Sudden starts could be dangerous. Never carry a tool or appliance by its cord, or yank the cord out of elec trical outlets. Keep cords away from heat, oil and sharp edges. " Remember that tools and appliances should be disconnected when they're being serviced, while changing accessories such as blades, and when they're (not in use. And they should Ibe stored indoors, in a dry, safe place, away from children And, UL safety engineers say, one of the most im portant things people should do is read instruction manuals and warning labels. Household accidents often happen because people don't know how to operate the equipment they own and don't know its limitations UL engineers admit that most safety rules are "plain common sensed "But, they point out, accident statistics demonstrate that common sense isn't all that comm- CHILD DAY CARE, Lakeland Park, McHenry. Keeping Wild Pets Just as you close the door of your summer cottage for the last time, your 13-year- old son runs up with a gift from the boy next door. It's a young raccoon. "Can I take it home," he says, "it eats regular dog food, and is just like 8 puppy." Right? Wrong! A wild or exotic pet is not the same as a domesticated animal. It will require special attention and care to thrive in your household. You should ask several questions before bringing your wild pet home. Will the pet require special food or housing? Is it healthy? Does it havcf any unusual requirements? If jou have the opportunity, let your veterinarian discuss the wild pet's/ characteristics with you.(/Then you can examine the pet before accepting it, and be alert for signs of ill health, including duu eyes or dirty coat. You should also schedule an early visit to your veterinarian if you do decide to bring the pet home. In deciding where to keep an exotic or wild pet, note that some animals, especially those from the tropics, require more warmth than mo6t cats and dogs. Their living quarters should be draft-proof as well a s e s c a p e - p r o o f . Considerable damage has been done by "escaped" monkeys and large parrots. Certain - animals require special accommodations inside the cage too. Snakes, for example, need a retreat - a large piece of broken flower pot, or hollow piece of wood. Lizards accustomed to licking rain from wet foliage may not drink from a bowl. You can satisfy their moisture requirement by placing a wet plant in the cage each morning. Make sure you know what your new pet will eat before you buy it. Although reptiles do not eat often, many times their food must be five, or they will refuse to eat and starve. The same rule holds for certain large spiders. Make sure the pet store owner informs you of the animal's requirements. Not all veterinarians are fully knowledgeable about wild a n i m a l n u t r i t i o n . V e t e r i n a r i a n s w i t h experience in exotic animal medicine can help you design a balanced diet, i n c l u d i n g v i t a m i n supplements, for most pets. Keeping a wild pet healthy is not an easy job. Monkeys, for instance, are extremely susceptible to tuberculosis; even zoos have problems keeping them well. Aifd there are few sprays or vaccines that are marketed for use on wild animals. Such animals as raccoons, skunks or otters are susceptible to both cat and dog diseases, and must be Immunized against both feline and canine distemper. Most veterinarians discourage keeping wild mammals (warm-blooded animals) as pets. When these animals are captured in thewild.it is impossible to be sure they are free from rabies, a disease fatal to man. There is, in fact, a constant reservoir of rabies in the native population of By Robert L Slear D.V.M Manager of Veterinary Services NOrden laboratories skunks, raccoons, bats, foxes and other wiro mammals. Every year, cases are reported where wild animals held in captivity suddenly begin to show signs of rabies after weeks or months of apparent good health. In such situations, all human beings in contact with the affected animal "i undergo a series? therapeutic injections. If you are determin keep a wild jpet, try to' someone who has kept [ type of animal before./ab that you can learn something about its disposition. Wild pets are often independent creatures, and may disappoint you with their lack of affection. Also, make sure that your new pet fits into your normal household routine. Some animals are active- only at night, and quickly bore owners who see a sleeping ball of fur day after aay. If you travel frequently, check before buying for someone in your vicinity willing to care for your pet while you are away. , , Some wild pets are being domesticated w i(t h considerable success- Gerbils (small mouselike rodents) are now commonJ.n pet ( stores across the courjtry. Chameleons, small frogs and toads, easily "'Isfied with a diet of raw at and small bugs, add and interest to balanced rariums. ^The demand for wild nimals as pets is, of course, ausing problems. For every ten animfels captured for dealers, dnly one or two survive':long enough to be sold. And the growing interest in exotic animals is encouraging a Mack market in endangered species. + One last caution: an exotic pet is easier to acquire than to discard. Zoos flooded with pleas to accept partially- tamed raccoons and the like probably will not take your pet if you tire of it. The pet store where you purchased your lizard, snake or spider .will.want it only if itlfrjn saleable condition - wetyrfed and healthy. And pets turned loose in woods or fields.after a period of captivity may starve before they learn to catch their own food, and otherwise have problems adjusting to their new environment. Dr. Stear regrets that he is unable to personally answer letters from pet owners. He suggests that readers consult their own veterinarians when Ineir pets have problems.
