PISTAKEE BAY - McHENRY, IL Monday thru Friday 9 am to 3 pm Saturday 9 am to 1 pm 815-385-8300 \L Local Artist ees Governor pr< In November of 1980," a$ the "Newborn Fawn" limited edition print was actually on the press, the children of ifae State of Illinois were voting on their choice for the state animal. By the end of November, all the votes were in from the whole state and the White- Tailed Deer was declared a winner. Soon after that decision was made, plans were im plemented for Sally Miller to •resent Governor James tompson with an artist's proof of the "Newborn Fawn". The procedure to gain approval of the idea took about the same amount of time as it took for the bill itself to work its way through committee, house and the senate of the state. The bill signing and presentation were scheduled to coincide, but the senate did not cooperate, and the print was actually presented a few weeks in advance of the signing. The whole Miller family took part in the presentation, Hank, Sally and children, Chad, Megan and Leah. Since the children of the state had done the selecting, Sally felt that her own children should help present the print. The governor extended a very warm welcome and confessed to having lobbied for the White-Tailed Deer's selection. He also apologized for the sluggishness of the senate approval. He ex plained that the print would hang in the governor's office first, move on to two-and- one-half-year-old daughter Samantha's bedroom, because he knew she and visitors to the mansion would enjoy it, then it would hang in the Illinois State museum in Springfield for all to see, before becoming part of his collection in his private quarters.
