The Streaks, shut out in the last two weeks, wasted no time getting to the end zone Friday night. Woodstock halfback Mark Rigby nearly ran th$>opening kickoff back for a score, but a saving tackle stopped him on the McHenry 35-yard line. With Rigby carrying the ball, the Streaks marched to the one-yard line, where back Lane Burmeister bulled his way over for the score at 9:09 in the period The extra point failed and the Streaks led 6-0 After receiving the kickoff, the Warriors were unable to move the ball and punted it back to Woodstock. The Streaks and the Warriors then alternated punts as neither team could sustain a drive. Woodstock punted for the second time in the quarter, but a clipping penalty, kept the ball in their possession and this time they cap italized. Taking the ball on the Warrior 45-yard line, the Streaks moved down the field and scored on an eight- yard scoring pass from quarterback Greg Bradshaw to Mike Cappi. The pass for the PAT was successful and Woodstock led 14-0. The Warriors received a few breaks in the second quarter, namely a roughing the passer penalty and also a pass interference call which put the ball on the Streak 28. But a misssed fourth down attempt turned the ball over on the 30. Rigby then took off on a 30- yard run, but the Streaks came back on a Bradshaw to Kevin Brown pass Tor another touchdown. Bur meister ran for the two-point conversion and the Streaks led 22-0 at intermission. In the third period, thS' Warriors showed signs of life as they stopped Woodstock on the McHenry 19-yard line, which set up the big play of the game. Warrior quar terback Doug Mullen found end Dennis Shaver alone on a post pattern and connected on a 81-yard scoring strike Mike Love then hit Mike Connor for the PAT and the Warribrs trailed 22-8 as the third period came to a close When McHenry got the ball back on its own 40, Mullen went back to the air He again hit Shaver which put the ball on the Streak 30. A pass to Dennis Deja was good for the touchdown, but a penalty wiped it out and put the ball on the Wood- streak 38. Mullen then hit Shaver with a 36-yard pass to the two-yard line, and the quarterback followed that with a sneak for the touch down. At 11:04 in the period, Mullen ran in the extra point nd McHenry trailed 22-16. A short kickoff gave the treaks the ball on their own Sticking with the ground e, Woodstock chewed up ef six minutes on the clock en Bradshaw hit Brown forVthe final touchdown. Burmeister scored the conversion on a run and Woodstock increased its lead to 30-16. McHenry got the ball back one final time, but an in terception halted any ideas of pulling the game out Woodstock just ran out the clock and wrapped up the victory. The Streaks piled up 199 yard rusning and 104 through the air for 303 total yards McHepTy had 52 yards on the ground and 196 yards passing for a total of 248 Shaver was the main benafactor as he hauled in three passes for 155 yards including a touchdown. The Gators had earlier defeated ' the Warriors here at McHenry. Carl Moesche Plaindealer The Marian .Central Hurricanes ARE for real. And if there was any doubt bjefope Saturday's home game against Harvard, there are few, if any, skeptics now. Although there may be a dispute from some quarters in the conference, the Hurricanes can probably make a solid claim to being the team to beat in the SHARK conference as they demolished Harvard 21-12 on a sparkling Saturday afternoon. The vfctory boosted Marian (2-0 SHARK, 3-1 overall) into sole possession of first place in the league. After four games in 1980, the Hurricanes were 0-4. Saturday's game started out with a long Hurricane drive. On its first possession, moved from its own 10 to the Harvard 32. But on a second and four, Harvard's Mike Shepherd intercepted the ball at the Hornet six- yard line, spelling an end to the Hurricane's scoring attempt. On its possession, Harvard found itself with it's back to the wall. But after a penalty that moved the Hornets back to the three-yard line, fullback Tim Linhart broke to his left for a 41 yard run to the Harvard 44-yard line. The Hornets then managed to break into Marian territory, but stalled at the Hurricane 45 and pnted away. The Hurricanes found themselves back at their own five-yard line, but Marian managed to move in the last three minutes of the quarter to the Harvard 40. But on third and nine at the Hornet 40, Linhart broke through to sack quarterback Don Rickert, and Marian was forced to punt away. Harvard failed to move through its series and a poor punt gave the Hurricanes the ball at the Harvard 40. On first down, Tom Pappas picked up two yards and Justin Traver followed with a three yard gain. An off sides call against Harvard then gave Marian a first down at the Hornet 30. On the following play, Traver took the handoff, burst to his left and scored on a 30-yard run with 9:37 left in the half Scott Spengel's extra point kick gave the 'Canes a 7-0 lead. Harvard failed to move on its following possession, and Marian got stuck deep in its own territory after a holding call and was forced to punt. The Hornet's Shawn Gerard took the punt at the Harvard 40and dashed to the Gurricane 19, and three [days later the Hornets were knocking on the door at the Marian Tour-yard line. But on second and four, Harvard fumbled and the Hurricands recovered at their own nine-yard line. Marian mov& only eight yards in the first three downs and on a fourth and two situation, Harvard recovered a bad Marian snap in the end zone for its first score. The extra point attempt failed, so Manan still held a 7-6 lead with some three minutes left in the half. In the third quarter, Harvard fumbled at its own 29 and Marian took over. On first down, Jeff Cychner picked up two yards to the 27 and Pappas followed with a 16-yard aash up the middle to the Hornet 11 for a first down. Cychner got the call again and scrambled to the Harvard two-yard line, and "then Rickert broke through the line two yards for a , Upchtfuwn with 9:40 left in Spengel's extra point attempt was good, boosting the Hurricanes to a 14-6 lead over the Hornets. Marian scored one more time late in the third quarter. Traver took A handoff from Chuck Hartlieb, broke to his right and scampered 72 yards for the touchdown with 3:36 remaining in the third. Spengel connected on his third extra point attempt of the day to make it 21-6.
