The meet begins at ap proximately 4:30 p.m. Carl Moesche Mary Stoner, Marian Central's head volleyball coach, has to be pleased with the performances she is getting out of the players on her make-shift team. With three starters out with injury, namely Jackie Weber, Holly Ryan and Maggie , Monson, the Hurricanes have brought up new players to the varsity level and have regrouped looking for that winning combination. Last week against Hononegah and Johnsburg, two Shark conference opponents, Marian did just that. In a rescheduled game at Hononegah Wednesday night, the Hurricanes dropped the openings set 15- 5, but then rallied to win 17- 15 in the second set after being down 12-4, then cap tured the deciding set 15-11 to win the match. Senior Julie Nylander led Marian in scoringrwith nine points, while Debbie Liggefl had eight points, and Sarah Traver had seven. "In that second set our determination came out," said Stoner. "We had the momentum going into the third set and we wanted it." That momentum carried into Thursday night's action against a Johnsburg team that was coming off a loss at North Boone Wednesday. The Skyhawks dropped the opening set 15-13, won the second set 15-10, then were defeated 15-11 in the finale. Playing at home, John sburg won the opening set against Marian 15-8. But the Hurricanes once again regained their composure after dropping an opening set, and won the match by winning the next two games 15-13 and 16'14. Led by the scoring of Beth Penza and Traver, who finished the evening with 10 #points .each, Marian built up a 10-2 lead in the deciding third set before the Skyhawks rallied to send the \ game into overtime. Senior Sue Dehn sparked Johns burg's comeback with several fine offensive sets as well as serving for three points. Another senior, Cheri Kofler, brought the Skyhawks back with crunching spikes and four straight serves that cut Marian's lead at one point to 13-11. Johnsburg did manage to, tie the game at 14-all on a Diane Heard serve, but never was able to take over the lead. After both squads repeatedly alternated net violations on serves, Traver finally put the game away with two consecutive serves. For Marian it was a second comeback in as many nights and nobody was more aware of that than Stoner. "With the injuries we've had on this team, we've really had to scrap," she said. "IX had to move up Penza and Kim Schuler and they responded real well. "We're inexperienced, but our kids really wanted it," she added. Stoner also signaled out the efforts of senior Jean Thompson who only scored three points, but played an invaluable role in the win. "She's our garbage player," said Stoner. "She's not afraid to go after anything, and tonight she was superb with her saves." Dehn, Kofler, Heard and Norine O'NeillTurned in top pe r fo rmances fo r t he Skyhawks.
