"My ACT score wasn't very good and I doubt if I could have gotten into a four-year school," Durkin said, explaining his decision to enroll at McHenry County college rather than at a univer sity. "I knew I was in terested in police work, but I didn't have plans to get a four-year college degree," Durkin recalls. Four years later Ken DUrkin graduated with honors from Western Illinois university with a Bachelor of Science degree in law enforcemnt administration and an Associate of Science degree minor in sociology and criminology. Durkin, who has returned home to McHenry, now works in the McHenry county jail as a deputy for the county sheriff's department. Durkin's success as a student both at McHenry County college and as a transfer student at W e s t e r n I l l i n o i s university parallels the experience many MCC students have when they transfer to a university. The relative cost-$3,500 per school year at the university versus the $600 he spent each year at MCC - also played a part in Durkin's decision to attend the local com munity college. "And I wanted to play basketball and I knew I wasn't good eftough to play at a university," Durkin said. "I think community colleges are great. I'd recommend them to anybody," Durkin said. Talking about MCC he said, "There's a good curriculum here and there are really good personal one-to-one relationships with in structors. The teachers here are just as qualified as the teachers at four year schools," he said. Durkin made his decision to transfer to Western after discussing possible schools to con tinue his police science studies with MCC criminal justice in structors, Mel Wallace and Richard Kelly. "That was the best advice I ever took," Durkin said, explaining that he was able to con centrate on junior and senior level courses once he enrolled at Western and while attending their program was able to work as an intern for the McHenry County Sheriff's police, where he is now a deputy. The internship was a good opportunity to find out about police work, Durkin said, and led him to future goals of working as a detective and-or working as a crime scene photographer. Aside from those career goals Durkin says he may continue his education in the future either working toward a master's degree or taking additional courses he wasn't able to fit in to his schedule during his four years as a full-time college student.
