Morning Stretch M C n i A M O M I T O B m m be - " i By STEVE K. WALZ-TELEVISION WRITER Hot role whets Jamie Lee's appetite Hollywood--So much has been said and written about late Playboy centerfold-cum-actress Dorothy Stratten, that it appears as if the media and Tinseltown are practic ing a form of necrophilia. NBC will take this macabre Episode one step further when it attempts to delve in to the cause and effect of the Strat ten scenario by airing a bio-pic, "Death of a Centerfold: Dorothy Stratten," on Sunday, November 1. Jamie Lee Curtis Portraying the ill-fated starlet is Jamie Lee Curtis, who up until this project held the blood-curdling title of "Screen Scream Queen" be cause of her work in some of film- dom's goriest yarns. Playing a Playboy centerfold should be a big jolt for Curtis' fans. Proud but... A "I'm proud of my horror pics. I played gooa strong heroines even though I was a victim. But I'm sure the audiences want to see me Her career cut-short by a jealous lover's bullet, the late Dorothy Stratten's Kfe is the focus of an NBC movie starring Jamie Lee Curtis. grow," the spunky actress began to explain. "Hopefully the public will accept me. In this picture, I play a sweet girl turned woman. To me, I didn't think it was that much of a depar ture from what I'd been doing, although Stratten came from Van couver and I've played small-town girls. "What people should understand here, is that we are not going for physical similarity. We're going for spirituality. Dorothy was much more zoftig and beautiful than I am. I've never even thought of myself as beautiful. "I'll admit that I wasn't able to really research the role at all. I only read the Village Voice and Playboy pieces. Some of the other available material was biased. I didn't meet with any of Stratten's family or friends either, because their opin ions are also biased somewhat. I learned more about her while play ing the role. She was a wonderfully sweet and innocent girl with dreams and aspirations. "A lot of the movie is fiction though, because in some situations we just didn't know how it happen ed. It is important to realize we're dealing with pseudo-truth." To acnieve the desired effect, Jamie Lee dyed her hair blonde (which she intends to keep) and lensed some additional "centerfold" type scenes for a steamy overseas distribution deal. She elucidated, "There's one scene showing my left breast. It's not that big a deal and I don't want to dwell on it because that*s not the crux of why I did this movie." So what was her motivation? "That something like this can hap pen. Love is very obssessive and Dorothy just didn't think she was being manipulated at first," Curtis fired back. Dorothy Stratten In terms of her own experiences with the 'svengali syndrome,' Curtis grew up in Hollywood with a show biz family (her mother is Janet Leigh and dad is Tony Curtis), which has opened Jamie Lee's eyes so-to- speak. She added, "I'm fairly street wise to it, sweetheart. I'm a quick learner. It's a savvy you acquire after sitting around sets all your life. Right now all I want is to put the pedal to the medal and get my career in gear, tv coswutoo u«v»ci». wc
