Making it last and profit through an entire lifetime takes uncommon determination and dedication. And having it prosper and bound ahead in the third generation js the extraordinary stuff of tradition. Yet that is the history of Sherman Plumbing & Heating. Founded in 1885 in Chicago by George W. Sherman, the company passed into the capable second generation hands of Louis Sherman upon his father's retirement early in this century. Upon Louis's retirement, management and control of the com pany was assumed by the third generation hands of his son, John Sherman, and his son-in-law, Greg Streb. Meanwhile, in 1951, the company had left its birthtown and moved to Crystal Lake, in effect, starting all over again. But this time with a big inventory of practical experience. In Crystal Lake, the company's first shop was a small barn rented in a residential neighborhood. Within two years, business growth had moved them into their first commercial building. And, in 1970, they moved to the present 27,500 square foot location on Route 14. A 1978 remodeling gave that site its current contemporary look. During this time, business had grown from 0 in 1950 to $5 million in 1979. How has Sherman Plumbing & Heating done it? Old Tom Edison's formula of IVo inspiration and 99ft perspiration, to be sure. And tradition. Now there is a fourth generation at work in the field.
