Here 'tis: ALL ABOUT GRANDMOTHERS • Written by a third grader in the western regions of the country). A grandmother is a lady who has no children of her own So she likes other peoples little children. A grandfather is a man- grandmother. He goes for walks with boys and they talk about fishing and tractors and things like that. I sually they are fat, but not too fat to tie kids shoes. They wear glasses and funny un derwear Some of them can take their teeth and gums out It is better if they don't typewrite or play cards, except with us. They don't have to be smart, only an swer questions like why dogs hate cats and how come God isn't married They don't talk baby-talk like visitors do. because it is hard to understand. When they read to us they don't skip or mind if it is the same story again: Everyone should try to have one, especially if they don't have television, because grandmothers are the only grown-ups who have got time 'Levy Center Newsletter) reeopy in the Senior Voice). Vivian adds this note: "I'm sure they cook, but that is not mentioned. I wonder why. maybe a modern kind who works. My grandchildren think of me as cooking or sew ing, all about the goodies." ()ld time songs are coming back Maybe not way, way back, but some people remember tunes like-- School days, school days Dear old golden rule days Heading and writing And arithmetic Taught to the tune of a hickory stick. You were my queen in calico I was your bashful barefoot beau You wrote on my slate I love you, Joe When we were a Couple of kids. We know a couple of girls who said they were sending me some old songs Maybe they will arrive by pony express. What about the words to "Come Josephine In My Flying Machine"? Had a note from Signa and Bill Molnaire, now residents of Iverness, Florida. They will be attending the Florida - McHenryites picnic Nov 14. Bill must have read the story we printed about the woman finding a pearl in an oyster so he has been trying each week to find one. He enclosed an ad from DJ's Oyster Bar in Tampa where he is researching. Just imagine! Somebody forgot to change the oil in that space ship so the take off has been delayed a couple of weeks Hope they have it win terized We usually pick spots for Friday night outing, sort of playing the field, but this time we landed back at McHenry Country Club with long time friends, John and Betty Looze. Just got in the door when a pleasant, friendly gal let us know she is a column booster We asked and learned her name is Gloria Sprague. Now, Gloria is the kind we like to meet. As we sat down, another booster, spoke to us. Had her write her name down in our little black book -- "B." Nuziard. Myrtle Procter, sitting at the same table asked if I got all girls to write their names in my little black book. Told her I hadn't asked "B." for her phone number. Obviously a fun loving gal, B " said she would give me her number. At a large table, they were celebrating birthdays of four in the .group. Ilavern Gregory was going to write down the names for me. but she got lost in song. I think it was a Medicare group Paul Walkington has given *us books in past years to bring sunshine and laughter into our life. Now he comes along with a book of poems and small town thoughts by Uncle Ezra. It's good. Thanks to our booking agent, we had the pleasure of taking part in a program at Spring Grove Sunday night. It was to honor Bill Leonhardt, caretaker at St. Peter's Church for many years. Bill is retiring at the age of 88 years. Oh - we had fun! My alarm clock is gaining time and my watch is losing so there is nothing to do but split the difference. We aren't catching a train. The resulting consensus in 1978 provide the basis for all League action on energy issues. In brief, that national position gives top priority to conservation, use of renewable resources (solar, wind and 'bioconversion , and the enviromentally sound use,of coal. The LWV believes that reliance on nuclear fisson should not be increased but that it does have a place in the nations current energy mix. The Rockford LWV has been concerned with the site and operation of the Byron nuclear power station. This plant, located 17 miles south west of Rockford, was designed in 1972 for operation in 1983. Members say, many new operation techniques and safety requirements have yet to be addressed by Commonwealth Edison and the Nuclear Regulatory commission. Representatives from the Rockford LWV will tell their story with a slide show presentation. Esther Perez, Natural Resource chair for the Woodstock-McHenry LWV, urges all interested persons to attend the program, which is open to the public rhe League, founded in 1920, is a non-partisan, issue oriented organization committed to effective government by informed, involved citizens.
