Beverly Martin 344-5332 Betty NellMay 728-0438 Florida Financial Editor Helps Set Record Straight (The following article appeared on the front page of the business section of the Palm Beach Florida Post, Sunday, September 27,1981. Under the headline "Banks and S & Ls Are in Trouble and Need Your Help" financial editor Bob Rollins explains how it is in the best interest of consumers to remain loyal to banks. Reprinted with permission.--Ed.) Helpl The banking and savings and loan institutions of this country face the possibility of running out of funds, and we need your help. We plead that you understand our plight. Our future rests in your hands. Between the U.S. government's borrowing and the flow of money into money market funds, we're headed for serious problems. Consider, for example, that last month you withdrew $3.3 billion more than you put into savings and loan associations and since the first of the year the savings loss totals nearly $20 billion. The net worth of the nation's 4.000 federally insured S&Ls has now dropped to $29 billion and has declined $2.8 billion since the start of the year As a result, the home building industry has hit a brick wall. Construc tion of new homes now crawls at an annual pace below 1 million units and is falling. True, part of the problem is high interest rates, but, there remains plenty of people who would like to buy a new home, but can't, mainly because we don't have the money to lend. Banks must compete with the federal government in borrowing funds to have money available and the federal government is winning. Believe it or not banks are running out of money to lend. Money market funds, which virtually were nonexistent five years ago. have amassed assets -- your deposits and savings -- of more than $150 billion. That's right. $150 billionl What are the funds doing with your money? Most of them are lending it to the federal government, which is paying unmprecedented interest rates. Granted, these funds are paying you high returns on your >nvc*tmant that is relatively safe and extremely liquid. Two points we'd like you to consider. First, banks and S8tLs cannot compete with money market funds They operate unregulated. We are overregulated The most interest we can pay on your checking account is 5V^ percent. We can offer you money market certificates, but there are severe penalties if you need the money within a certain time period and we cannot pay the same rate of interest you receive from money funds That's our problem and we're doing something about it. We will fight to see that the money funds become regulated or we get deregulated Secondly, and this is the point we want to stress, the dollars you put into money funds are leaving the local economy How do you measure the loss of dollars to a community? If you and your friends take your savings out of your bank or S&L and send them to New York, or wherever, to place in a money fund we don't have the money here to serve you Your neighbor wants to buy a new car. Sorry, we don't have the money to lend Your relative wants to buy a home sorry, the dollars aren't here. Your employer wants to purchase some new equipment that will result in more prople being employed Nope, no bucks The next time you want to borrow some money and your banker looks at your financial statement and notices that you have money market fund, don't be surprised if he or she suggests that you try borrowing the money from your fund. Yes, you can get your own money back, but see how much they'll lend you from the rest of the fund. Your neighborhood banker and local savings and loan official have held your dollars and used them to work and improve the local community and its economy In previous days," when someone's barn burned, neighbors came over and helped rebuild it Our barn is burning Printed For Your Information By FIRST NATIONAL BANK OF McHENRY McHENRY SAVINGS & LOAN ASSN.
