Illinois 60014 (815)459-2641 PET OVERPOPULATION By Bob Ransom In the future, Helping Paws' lack of an adequate animal shelter will make it more and more difficult to cope with the pet over population explosion and to assist pets in crisis. Pet overpopulation has been accelerated in recent years by three new forces: (1) mass production pet trade (puppy mills); (2) laboratory dog trade; (3) aggravated by inflation and recurrent recessions. The genetically weak dogs flooding the market benefit everyone but the owner. McHenry county has about 25,000 dogs and 30,000 cats. Quantities of pets like these have forced many animal shelters across the country to become houses of death. Not so with Helping Paws, however, whose mission is saving animals. Pet overpopulation is a direct result of the con- t i n u i n g i n d u s t r i a l revolution and its offshoots of materialism, mobility and indifference. Research shows that the average duration of pet ownership is four and a half months. Over 11,000 animal related complaint calls were received in the county in 1979. Helping Paws mans two phone lines in their tiny office during business hours to fulfill their mission of saving animals. All pet adoptions must be validated by the signing of a contract along with the adoption fee which includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery from a vet of HP's choice, or a deduction from the cost of the surgery if done by a vet of your choice. When adopting a pet through Helping Paws please, for your future reference, keep name, address and phone number of the person from whom you adopted pet.
