Business Education Leader At Meeting FIFTY YEARS AGO -Mfftken from the files of November 19, 1981) The local Boy Scout troop and the city of McHenry were honored when a McHenry boy, Harold Vycital, received the highest rank in Scouting, that of Eagle Scout, at the Court of i Honor held at the McHenry , Community high school and , M.L. Schoenholtz, scout- i master i and leader of the \ McHenry troop, who is already an Eagle Scout, received a Palm as a further award in Scouting, being the second one in the county to receive this award. Other local boys who were among those to receive merit badges were Richard Vycital, Stanley Vycital, Vernon Kramer and Raymond Hughes, while Vernon Kramer was also made a first class Scout at this time. From Bacon's Strip: "Howard Wattles may be a sworn devotee of horse racing but he is crazy enough-pardon the ex- pression-to drive alone to Chicago just to see a professional football game. It may be that he wanted to go alone so that when he took his tumble there would be no one to observe his plight." FORTY YEARS AGO (Taken from the flies of November 20, 1941) At the suggestion of Secretary of Navy Knox, H.P. Owen of McHenry has been made ,Navy editor, to ' help the Ifavy in giving ambitious local young men information about the op portunities the "Two Ocean" Navy offers them for technical training and ad- " ; vancement as they serve their country in its ' emergency. 'Pvt. Theodore C. Winkel, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.N. Winkel, Rt. 2, McHenry, was graduated from the Airplane Mechanics course of the Chanute field branch of the U.S. Army Air Corps Technical schools. The Forte club, assisted by the McHenry Choral society will give a Fall Music festival in the high school auditorium. This event, new to McHenry, is being sponsored by the Mothers club for the benefit of the ,,n McHenry public library. . , Although the Choral dub is assisting in this festival, this is not their annual concert. TWENTY-FIVE YEARSAGO (Taken from the files of November 21, 1956) Mrs. Frank Massheimer of Lakemoor had a few anxious moments when she found the only exit to her house en veloped by flames. Mrs. Massheimer was sitting in the living room when she heard a noise and went to investigate. She found much of the kitchen and enclosed porch in flames, including the only method of escape. She was forced to go out through a window and onto the roof. Many times of late, as the old has given way to the new in the interest of progress, many who grew up with McHenry find only memories left. Such is the case again as contractors started the task of breaking cement on the high school tennis courts preparatory to beginning construction of the new addition. Joe A. Cina was elected president of the McHenry Township Kiwanis club. Others named to serve with him were George Pedersen, first vice-president; Frank Schroeder, second vice- president; Fred Sandier, secretary; and Horace Wagner, treasurer. TEN YEARS AGO (Taken from the files of November 28, 1971) A former/ McHenry resident, Mrs. Sandra Bender, earlier this month became the youngest person to be elected to the South Windsor, Conn., town council, the governing body of that community of IS,000. She is the third woman to have attained this important g o v e r n m e n t a l s e a t . Although a newcomer to the political scene, Mrs. Bender has been active in civic affairs, serving as chairman of the Government com mittee of the Community Development Action plan. She is the former Sandra Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Redwanz of McHenry. Thomas Lawson, an employee of the McHenry post office, was elected president of the Boone- McHenry County Rural Carriers of Illinois at the semi-annual meeting. Larry Booster of McHenry was named secretary of the association. SQUADRON ATGALT The Crystal Lake Civil Air Patrol squadron was reactivated earlier this year, with 1st. Lt. William L. Barkow assigned as its squadron commander by Group 22 Commander Major John Ryan. Lt. Barkow's previous positions in CAP were Administrative Of ficer, Finance Officer, and Deputy Commander. The awards he earned during his eight years of service are the Red Service and Senior Recruiter ribbons. In the past, the squadron has been meeting at the Crystal Lake Ambutal; however, Hank Zeiger, manager, has now given his permission for the squadron to meet at Gait airport, Greenwood road, Greenwood. OFFER TRADES HOUSE Johnsburg's third Building Trades house, an 1,876 square foot home located in Lake Dawnwood sub division, is now for sale with financing available through the school at a rate below the conventional mortgage rate. Pat Bingman, the school's business manager, states that there have been several interested buyers but financing at the high interest rates was a problem. There is a hope that the move by the district's board of education to offer a lower rate of finaancing will provide new interest. Any inquiries regarding this home can be directed to her at the district's central of fice, 385-6916.
