Hutchinson knew that he would have a young, com petitive team, but he never knew that his team would go so far "Our goal this year was to win the conference, which we did," be said "Anything more than that we figured would be an added bonus. "But we also won the county meet, our „ own District, a real tough Sec tional, and now we place third in the state. It's pretty tough to do much better than that," he added. McHenry lost only one dual meet of the year, that to Fox Valley opponent Crystal Lake Central 27-28 But the Warriors avenged the only loss on their 14-1 record by beating the Tigers in both the County and in the con ference meets. McHenry also reached av final ranking of sixth in the state in the final Class AA Power Ratings In both the conference and the county meets, it was Cepulis that propelled the team to victory. But later when Cepulis became ill, someone else had to take over and that someone was Carby. Competing against some of the top ranked schools in the state, Carby led McHenry in the Sectional meet with a ninth place finish And he repeated his performance Saturday. "This has to be the best team I've ever coached," concluded Hutchinson, "^t just goes to show that two or three outstanding in dividuals isn't enough You have to have at least five guys to be successful." At McHenry. they have those guys. INSP. EST. NO. 5701 There will be wrestling at Johnsburg high school this winter. There was some speculation as to whether the, program would cont inue^ after a shaky first year, but thanks to the efforts of concerned parents. Don March and his assistant Mike Roberts will again have a team this season The Skyhawks were a young, inexperienced team a year ago and finished with a 3-10 record There were no seniors on the team. Funds to support the program were equally lacking and the program faced extinction this year with a $3600 deficit. But parents of Johnsburg athletes came to the rescue by forming a Wrest l ing Booster Club that would raise the needed funds. "The parents and the athletes did just a little bit of everything." said a pleased March "They did all that they could so that we would have a program." Among the many activities that brought in money were T-shirt and cushion sales, sel l ing taffey apples a t Johnsburg 's "Saufen and Spiel Days", and cleaning up the football field after each home game. The wTestling program is now intact for this season and Johnsburg has also been put on the schedule when it moves into the Northwest Suburban conference Of the 31 athletes out for wTestling this year, the team is again dominated by un derclassmen Only four seniors are competing. "Our program is based on a two-level system," said March. "But since we're so £ young, we've combined our two teams, and we're looking for leadership from our upperclassmen." One of the seniors that March is counting on heavily is Mike Dalan who will wTestle in the IK pound weight class He was also recently selected on the SHARK all- conference football team as a tackle Also expected to fulfill big roles for the Skyhawks are co-captains Joe Kalisek and Mike Htrckes Kalisek, a senior, is expected to compete in the 138 pound class, while Hurckes, a junior, should wrestle at 126. Both are also coming off successful fall sports seasons, Kalisek in cross country and Hurckes in football Two sophomores that fared well as freshmen last season are Lars Swanson (at 119) an Kenny Pedraza (at 132). Both are returning starters The two other seniors on the squad are Larry Kohn and Brett Everett, while junior members include Dave Free. Dave Moravec. Joe Hendrix. Steve Knight, and Paul Staib Other sophomore Skyhawks are Bentley Treat. Jim Roberts, Mike Cahill. Norman Rokosz. Dale Zalke, John Grenman. and Brian Elia. The 12 feshmen wrestlers are Guy Bazilwich, Marty Siddons, Dave Haisma. Mark Dumelle. Kirk Cosper. Martin Dryer, Rich Thayer. Tom iKinney. Tom Ziebel. Tony Garcia. Joel Rowland, and Bob Dunavan Manager of the wTestling team is Bob Heber With one year of ex perience under their belts, the Skyhawks feel that they can be more competitive this year Of the Skyhawks' 10 losses last season, four of than were by four points or less. Johnsburg also has more athletes involved in its program than it did last year. In 1980, 128 athletes took part in grades K-12. while this year's total im proved to 153. "Our goal is to have a winning dual record," said March. "We would also like to advance a few kids to Sectionals, we do have the athletes to do it. "Geographically, we're in the middle of two of the best schools in the state," he continued. "Grant is one of the top Class AA schools and Harvard is a very strong ClaSs A school. We'll be competing against Harvard in conference this year, and next year we'll be moving into Grant's conference. We'll take our lumps, but we'll also better ourselves." Johnsburg will open its season on Wednesday, Nov. 25 when it travels to Win nebago for a 6:30 p.m. match. Carl Moesche Coach's Corner In only the second year of the program. Don March begins his second year as head wrestling coach at Johnsburg. This is his ninth year in coaching, and his fourth at Johnsburg where he is also serves as an assistant football coach. March attended Illinois College where he graduated with a B.A. degree in English and was also very active in athletics there He also played football and competed in wrestling and track. He previously coached a Sbeibyville high school and prides himself in having sent wrestlers to state four years in a row from 1973-78 at that Ihp 11 »iu I'V DON MARCH school Originally from Rock- ford, the 30-year old March now makes his home in McHenry.
