A collective nostalgia has swept die nation.-, Enthusiasts eagerly search for vintage clothing, toys, tools, house hold items and other me mentos of "the good old days." Good quality reproductions are also in great demand. Now, there's even a collection of children's fashions from the past, re-created from original designs of the twenties, thir ties and forties.. .just in time for holiday gift-giving. Nannette's "Nostalgia Col lection" was created by this leading children's wear firm to honor its 60th anniversary. "The major difference be tween die original designs and the 'new' styles is that,we've used only easy-care perma nent press fabrics, tor the convenience of modern mothers," notes vice-presi- dent of design, Betty Adcock. Then and now "During the 'Roaring Twenties' parents outfitted their daughters in dresses of real silk georgette," Adcock explains. "Then synthetic silk (rayon) was invented in the PLAY IT AGAIN... Styles of the thirties were greatly influ enced by Hollywood's famous young starlet, Shirley Temple. It was not unusual to see lines of look-alike little girls parading out of beauty parlors on Saturday mornings, show ing off their Shirley Temple ringlets. In those days, Nan- nette duplicated styles \vorn by Miss Temple in her films for fashionable, star-struck toddlers. The war years popularized military styling for all ages. Epaulets, crisp piping and red-white-and-blue colorings give a patriotic air to many of the Nostalgia styles. The spirit of Christmas expressed by age-old tradition of gift-giving It has been the practice of people throughout the ages to set aside certain periods of the year to bestow gifts upon loved ones, neighbors and the less fortunate. Almost all the religions and progressive phi losophies of the world encour age this altruistic spirit. Giving not from a sense of duty or in return for receiving, but joyously in recognition and appreciation of life's bountiful gifts, is a recurring theme in history, religion, art, folklore and legend. Occasionally, as during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England, who relied on Christmas gifts exacted from subjects to replenish her ward robe, the giving of gifts has been regarded more as a duty than a matter of free choice. For the most part, however, gift-giving represents one of man's nobler and most funda mental customs. The Christmas gift-giving tradition was bom when The Three Wise Men offered gold, frankincense and myrrh in thanks for the coming of a Saviour in Israel. But, the true spirit of giving predates the birth of Christ. Friezes on the walls of the Parthenon depict ancient Greeks offering gifts to Athena, the goddess of wis dom, for her g6idance. During the early days of the Roman Empire, at the begin ning of the new year the rich thanked the gods for their good fortune, by offering pas tries to those less fortunate so that the year might be sweeter, lamps that it might be full of light, and silver and gold that wealth might attend them. Certainly, to find a histori cal precedent for the bestow ing of fragrance gifts at Christmas, one need only think of the Gift of the Magi. There is no more dramatic an example of the great value man has always placed on fra grant essences. This holiday season, why not be a traditionalist yourself and give the gift of fragrance? Those you cherish will be sure to remember your expression of love and thoughtfulness every time the scent lingers in the air.
