Ringwood News Doris Low 653-9262 Katy Christopher 385-8037 Brownie Wins Competition Back in the middle of October, over 600 girls from Brownies to Senior Scouts, gathered for the Shabbona Hills Pow Wow. At that time the girls were asked to design a patch symbolic of the occasion and scouting. There were 436 girls entering the competition, including six-year-old Michelle Daurio, member of Brownie Troop 461. Last week Thursday, there were shouts of joy in the Michael Daurio home when word was received that Michelle's design had been chosen for the pow wow patch this year. The design was done on a large earth ball with the outline of the world (green for land, blue for water), the American flag on it, and the words "Shabbona Pow Wow". This is a great achievement for a little girl just starting out in scouting and competing against older girls as well. Our congratulations to you, Michelle. We are proud of your accomplishment. EMERGENCY CLOSINGS Winter's coming and bad weather will soon be upon us bringing bad roads, which will cause conern about school closings. The director of transportation will keep conditions evaluated each day and if there is a decision to close the school because of inclement weather, it will be made prior to 6:30 a.m. each day. The only exception would be those times when school is in session and the day becomes shortened because weather conditions become worse. As soon as a decision is made concerning the closing of school, the following television and radio stations will be notified: WGN Radio 720; WGN Television channel 9; WKRS Radio Subscribe Ml • I • _ The McHenry Plaindealer 3812 W. It is the time during which we prepare for the birthday of Jesus by remembering how his life and teachings changed the earth's history. Just as a candle lights a dark room, so Jesus brought the light of peace, love, joy, hope, faith and service into the world. Centuries ago, peasants in Europe originated the Ad vent candle custom of preparing their minds and hearts for Christmas. On the first Sunday, members of each family gathered around the mantel, on which five candles were placed. As part of a ceremony of Bible reading, singing and prayer, they lighted one candle. The next Sunday they shared another Bible story, carol, and prayer, as they lighted the first candle plus a second. The ; weekly ceremony continued until Christmas day, when all candles were lighted - the last and tallest one sym bolizing the birth of Christ. HOME Local resident, Wanda Bistolfo has returned home from Good Shepherd hospital in Barrington, where she was confined for a week. Wanda had surgery on her knee and is now confined to a cast from her hip down below her knee. She is doing OK but hobbling around with ho- walker. I'm sure she would appreciate a card or call to help make her days shorter. Keep up the good work, Wanda and get well soon. Martha Betts also is home from the hospital. The doctor told her to take it easy, don't get excited and don't overdo. Martha, is that possible??? It better be! BIRTHDAYS Best wishes to Rich Miller and Jack Kuhrt on Nov. 29 and on Dec. 2, we find that Billie Jo Bounds will be six years old. Dec. 3 will find Lee Tomlinson adding another candle to her cake and so will Janet Bauer Halligan adding another candle Dec. 4.Dec.5 finds Bill Baker, Joe Visconti and Dorothy Winters celebrating their natal day. "Happy Birthday" to all of you wonderful people, and we wish you many more to come. ANNIVERSARIES "Happy Anniversary" to Bev and Chuck Ackerman, way down there in Texas, on Dec. 1. The secretary's and treasurer's reports were read and approved. Plans were made to hold its annual family potluck dinner at the Knights of Columbus hall in McHenry Sunday, Nov. 15, at 2. It was also noted that our club took first place in the county PAGE S - PLAINDEALER window display contest. The meeting was ad journed and a party for nine handicapped youths as our guests followed. We played games and awarded prizes. A very pleasant experience was enjoyed by all. Dawn Williamson, Club reporter FRIDAY.
