5 I Members of the Wildcat Booster Club recently had their efforts from an October cheese sale pay off ai this mural was painted on the gymnasium wall at Johnsburg Junior high school. Mr. Mike Cajthaml designed and painted the mural. ) STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Garvey Takes Over Marian Wrestling Marian Central wrestling coach Mike Garvey has a lot ahead of him as he begins his first year at the helm of the Hurricanes. The team he inherits returns only one senior, that being standout Tom Schermerhorn. The rest of the squad will be around for a couple years to give Garvey the opportunity to build his program. The rest of the Hurricane squad consists of eight juniors, six sophomores, and four freshmen. "The main thing we are concerned about is im provement," said Garvey. "You take your lumps at the beginning, but then you get better. And everyone but Tom will be back for another year." Schermerhorn, one of six returning lettermen for Marian, had by far the best record on the team last year at 20-3. Wrestling at either the 126 or 132 pound weight class, Schermerhorn will be the team's unquestioned leader as he begins his fourth year on the varsity. The other returning let termen are juniors Greg Eckstein, Mike Herff, Kevin Niedospial, and Jeff Nuhsbaum; and sophomore Jim Mass. Other juniors on the squad include Jeff Cychner, Tom Hoffman, Richard Kelly, and John Nebel. Sophomores are Tony Piwowarczyk, Jeff Snow, Steve Stilling, Mark Wohnrade, and Sean Sawyer. A disappointment to Garvey has been the sparse turnout by the freshmen class. The only four first- year athletes are Tony Dello, Matt Congoli, Jim Gardner, and Kevin McConville. With only 19 athletes out for the team, Garvey forsees the problem of failing to fill every weight class, sub sequently losing matches via forfeit. "In a couple of the weight classes, we're not sure at this time who will be wrestling," he said. RTE. 120. , McHENRY. ILL. 167, 145, and 138 classes are still undecided. "But we're concerned more about our kids having a winning personal record than a the team record," he added. "We're going to lose points because of forfeits, but we want our kids to have a record that they can be proud of." Wohnrade won nearly two- thirds of his matches last year at 98 pounds, and he is expected to defend his weight class. Others that seem to have the inside track at their respective classes are: Kelly as the heavyweight (13-10 last year), Niedospial at 155, Mass at 132, and Nuhsbaum at 105. Piwowarczyk is Garvey's leading candidate for the 185 class provived the 6'4" 200 pounder can get down to that weight. Another problem facing Garvey is the possibility of a wrestler becoming injured therefore further depleting his ranks. But in his two years as a coach, he has survived this ordeal. "In the two years that I coached at Michigan, I never had a wrestler miss a meet or a tournament because of an injury," he said. "I'm proud of that record because that way you still give yourself a chance. "Another goal that I set for this year was that we don't ever want to leave a meet saying that the other team was in better shape than we were in," he continued. "I'm a strong believer in physical conditioning." The Hurricanes will begin their season on Tuesday, Dec. 1 when they host Grant for a J.V. and freshmen- sophomore meet beginning at 6:00 p.ip. The varsity will open its season on Saturday, Dec 5 npetes in the Tournament when Richmond beginning at 10:00 a m Carl Moesche Coach's Corner Twenty-six year old Mike Garvey begins his first year as head wrestling coach at Marian Central.
