On The Sidelines By Dick Robbitt A note from Sport's Editor Carl, that thanks to Bruce Thacker Class of 71, the Warriors won their last football Same in 1970 over the Libertyville Wildcats 14-12. So it has been only n years since the Warriors last won a homecoming game. Warrior cross country fans got a real treat last week, when the veteran York of Elmhurst coach Joe Newton spoke to the large gathering at West campus. Joe, who runs three miles daily at 5:30 a.m., was in rare form with his speech and stories. He gave the young Warrior squad his eight points for success, not only for cross country but in anything they undertake. He listed in order: 1. Compete, 2. Think under pressure, 3. Go through pain, agony, and hurt, 4. Set a goal and follow through, 5. Aim for the top, 6. Strive for victory, 7. Never give up, 8. Reach out for God, morality, and clean living. With each of the above, the veteran coach gave an example, some humorous, and others on the more serious side. He had nothing but praise for "Hutch" and his Warrior team, and commented to me later that he thinks the Warriors will be one of the teams to beat next season in the state meet. Marty Sobczak and his "Hassling Warriors" have started the season out with two wins. We hope that the hard luck coach can keep his team hale and nearty this season. Injuries and illness the past several seasons has been Coach Mary's cross to bear. Tomorrow Mike Shanahan will take his tankers to the Hoffman Estates Invitational, as usual the likeable coach has just a few swimmers on his varsity this season. Pat Wirtz and his gals will take the court next week Thursday for their home opener against Lake Zurich. The Warriors of Ken Ludwig will have a busy weekend playing tonight at Cary, and then traveling to Grant tomorrow night for a non-conference game against the Bulldogs. Home opener is next Friday, Dec. 11, against Jacobs. of basketball, we got Dave Mihevc and his Ouija board out of mothballs for his seasons pick in the Fox Valley. In the past the Ouija board has been pretty close, but we hope this season, is like my crystal ball broken, broken and broken. His picks are Woodstock with a 12-2 record, Crystal Lake Central 11-3, Crystal Lake South 8-6, and Cary Grove popus up with a 7-7 record. Next in line is Dundee, Crown, and Jacobs all with 5-9 records and the Warriors with a 3- 11 count. We will be keeping tabs on Dave and his picks this season. With the start of the basketball season we again will go down memory lane for the old grads to let them relive their wonuer days at McHenry high school. It is always nice to start out with a big win, and what could be a better team to pick on than the old hated foes the Barrington Broncos. On February 15, 1974, the Warriors of Ken Ludwig really stuck it to the Broncos by the tune of 75-49. Ron Himplemann led the locals with 23 big points, and had able assistance from Roger Wanta, Mike Stark and Steve Buss. McHENRY VS. DECEMBER 4.1M1 Swim Team Lacks Personnel TK« HAH«..» ...UL C A When McHenry high school's swim team begins its season Saturday at the Hoffman Estates In vitational, don't expect the Warriors to overwhelm their opponents. There just isn't enough people available to do that this year. , Beginning his tenth season as head coach at McHenry, Mike Shanahan has only eight athletes out for the varsity squad, his smallest turnout ever. He intends to bring up two more sophomores which would bring the squad's total to 10 members, but Shanahan nonetheless concedes that it won't be enough. "Realistically, you need 12 swimmers plus a diver to be good," he said. "To be really good, you need 15 or 16 swimmers." McHenry is still without a diver at this time also. The Warriors have been victimized by little or no swimming experience at the freshman level. "Many have no summer background or no previous experience," said Shanahan. "Last year we had one freshman with experience and this year it's the same thing." Five swimmers that would have been juniors this year also decided not to return. So after finishing 9-9 last season, what does Shanahan have in store for this year's team? "It's going to be difficult for us to compete in the dual meets with so few people," he said. "So this year we're going to dedicate ourselves towards the school's top 10 board. We'd like to put at least half of our kids up there. "This year is the most we've ever swam during practice," he added. "We're also working hard with the weights and hope to stay on them for the entire year." Because of his team's small size, Shanahan noted that it's possible to get more done during the practice sessions. Middle distance swimmers that swam 5000 yards at practice in the past, will be swimming 8000 yards now, he said. Seven of the eight varsity members are returning lettermen led by senior Wade Cepulis. Cepulis, who finished second on the squad last year in dual meet points with ll9Vfe, is the only member already ranked in a top 10 category. He is fourth in th 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:38.7. and he is fifth in 200 yard freestyle with a 2:02.6 clocking. He set both of these marks last year. The Warriors' only other senior member is Ed Donohue who finished with 361i; dual meet points last season, good for ninth place on the team. He will compete in the 100 yard butterfly. Darrin Cepulis, Wade's younger brother, heads the junior crop as he finished fourth in dual meet points last year with 73Vs. He will compete in the butterfly and the individual medley events. The remaining returning letterwinners are juniors Bob Schaefer (breast- stroke), Rich Miller (500 freestyle), Dave Zim merman (50 & 100 freestyle), and sophomore Mike Mc- Nish (50 & 100 freestyle). The returning non- letterwinner is junior Jim Patterson who will swim distance events, and the two sophomores that Shanahan may move up to varsity are Bill Iwanski (breaststroke) and Todd Hughes (50 & 100 freestyle). After the Hoffman Estates Invitational Saturday, McHenry will travel to Larkin on Tuesday, Dec. 8 for a 4:30 p.m. meet. Carl Moesche The McHenry County Tumbleweeds will be host to twenty power tumbling teams on Sunday, Dec. 6 at McHenry high school, West campus. The public is in vited to watch the 500 tumblers perform. The meet will start at 10 a.m. and an admission fee will be charged. Refreshments will be sold. The meet will be fillmed for calb etelevision. The Tumbleweeds last competition was in Spring Valley on Nov. 15. Leading the winners was Pat Sperry who brought home a first place medal in the boys intermediate competition. Jenny Ricker took a sixth in the intermediate girls group with teammates Stacy Hudjera and Debbie Graef also tumbling as in termediates. Karly Kunzer captured a third place for the advanced girls. Colleen Samen and Tracy Hudjera also were in the advanced group. In the novice girls division, Dia Hellios got a fifth place ribbon and Gina Cristy was also in the novice com petition. The 60 Tumbleweeds who will demonstrate their skills on Sunday at West campus hope that many adults and children will attend for an enjoyable entertaining day. -Coach's Corner Mike Shanahan M i k e ' ' S o n n y ' ' Shanahan begins his tenth year as head coach of McHenry's boys swim team. Johnsburg lost its final game of that tournament to Wauconda 58-57, marking the second time this year Beck's team was beaten by a single point. After four contests, Harvard is also without a victory. The Hornets were last beaten Tuesday night at Walworth, Wis. Big Foot high school. Marian Central is off to a fine start winning its first three games under Hans Rokus. The Hurricanes won all three Thanksgiving Tournament games at Burlington Central including a 53-49 decision ovr Rich- mond-Burton in the finale.
