Warrior Wrestlers At .500 McHenry high school's wrestling team split in two home matches over the weekend to put its record at 3-3 for the year The Warriors won their conference opener Friday night against Cary Grove 37- 24, then lost a close 32-27 decision against Stevenson Saturday afternoon. Sophomore Steve Carby improved his record to 6-0 for the year in the 105 weight class with a pair of pins and was named "Wrestler of the Week." Carby also leads the team in take downs with 10 and is a co-leader in number of falls with four. Senior Scott Schmitt (138) kept pace with Carby by recording a pair of victories to keep his record perfect in six matches also. Schmitt has won three of those matches by pins. The senior 112 pounder lost a tough 1-0 match the following afternoon against Stevenson, but stands at 4-2 for the year. Connor is also one of three McHenry wrestlers to have recorded four pins. Friday night Johnsburg extended its losing streak to five games as the Harvard Hornets dumped them 67-54. This was the first con­ ference game for both schools, and neither had a win before it started. As it had done in previous games, Johnsburg moved out to an early lead. Baskets by Terry Boyer, Joy Meyers, and Tom Pieper put the Skyhawks up 6-2 in the early minutes of the game. Har­ vard came back to take a 13- 12 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Hornets took control of the game by outscoring the Skyhawks 17-9. Six of Johnsburg's nine points came at the hands of senior Pieper. The game was played fairly even in the second half, although Johnsburg was still outscored in both the final two quarters of play. Johnsburg scored 18 points in the third period, but Harvard scored 19 in the period to extend its lead to 49-39. Boyer had six of Johnsburg's points in the third period. Pieper led the Skyhawks in the final quarter scoring nine of his team's 15 points, but again Harvard outscored Johnsburg 18-15 to win the game by 13 points, 67-54. Pieper led all scorers with 21 points while Boyer finished with 10. Meyers had eight points and Jeff Bart- mann added six. Ben Anderson led Harvard with 18 points. McHenry Cagers Lose At Cary Grove, Grant The Warriors of Ken Ludwig took it on the chin over the weekend, dropping games to Cary Grove 61-51 and Grant 66-48. In both games, the Warriors fell behind early in the contest and trying to play catch up ball was just too much for them. In the Fox Valley opener against the Trojans, McHenry dropped behind 14- 7 at the first period as Graznow, the Trojan for­ ward made five of seven shots from the field. Gary Freund's three points and Steve Babb's two baskets were the total of the Warrior points on the board. In the second period after Freund's 15-footer at the 7:45 mark, the Warriors hit a dry spell for three minutes. The Trojans, meanwhile, were able to connect on three baskets and took the momentum into halftime which they led at 30-19. In the third period, Babb found the range for three quick baskets in the first minute of play, and it looked as if the Warriors were coming back to life. Tur­ novers, however, took over and Cary Grove rallied for several unanswered baskets. The remainder of the period saw both teams trade baskets, but the Warriors still trailed 49-39 going into the final quarter. In the final eight minutes, both teams again traded baskets with the Warriors being unable to close the gap losing by 10 points. Mike Bauml led McHenry with 16 (Mints while Babb finished with 11 and Freund had 10. LOSE TO GRANT On Saturday night, the Warriors traveled to Grant where they dropped a non- conference game 66-48. The Bulldogs jumped off to a quick 13-5 first period lead, as the Warriors were as cold as the weather in their shooting. McHenry didn't score for the first 4:30 of the period as Grant led 7-0 at that time. Th second period was more of the same as the Bulldogs stretched their lead 19-5 before Randy Buenzli made a couple of charity tosses to break the ice for McHenry. The Warriors trailed 30-18 at halftime, and the third period was a disaster. McHenry was held scoreless for over four minuted before Bauml canned one from the corner. But at that time the game was out of reach as the Warriors trailed 40-20 with 3:30 remaining in the period. Freund and Dan Long ended the scoring for the Warriors as they trailed 50-26 at the quarter. With the game out of reach, Charlie "Wags" Wegener sparked the Warriors in the closing minutes. The 5-6 guard hit his first shot from the cor­ ner, Lively put one in, and "Wags" hit another 15-footer to put the crowd on its leet. Taking early 17-1 and 26-3 leads, the Buss-Stop was never threatened. Randy Neiss led all scorers with 18 points off nine buckets. Jim Heard, the league's leading scorer, and Steve Kasperzyk each had 16 points for the winners. Dave Lawson, 11 points, and Bruce Harbacke, 10 points, rounded out the balanced attack for the Buss-Stop. Kip Novotny and Cary Decker had 12 points each for Peer Inn. The Warriors, led by second-year coach Pat Wirtz, are coming off a 4-16 record from a year ago, which included a 2-11 mark in the Fox Valley con­ ference. Expected to be starting for McHenry Thursdy are Greta Larsen, Terri Blume, Robin Geiger, Debbie Koerber, and Karen Karpavicius. The junior varsity game will begin at 6:00 p.m. with the varsity contest to follow at approximately 7:30 p.m. Marian Central's boys basketball team won its fourth in a row Friday night against Hononegah, but then dropped its first game of the season Saturday in a non- conference tilt against Wisconsin Rapids Assump­ tion. The Hurricanes made their SHARK conference opener a 63-60 thriller as they beat the Indians on their own court. "It was a real satisfying win for us," said Rokus. "It's nice to start the con­ ference season with a win and especially with a win on the road. "They knew us real well too," he added. Hononegah's assistant coach, Kerry Muldowney, was , an assistant under Rokus before leaving Marian after last year. After leading by four to six points for much of the contest, the Hurricanes were tied by the Indians at with a minute to play at 60-60. Some clutch free throw shooting down th stretch then won the game for Marian. Junior Ed Kennedy got the fireworks going by stealing the ball and being fouled on an attempted layup. Kennedy, who finished with 10 points, calmly sank both free throws to give the Hurricanes a 62-60 lead. Hononegah missed on its attempted tying field goal and senior Scott Trucken- brod was fouled -while grabbing the rebound.^ He then sank a free throw td put the game away with :10 remaining. Truckenbrod finished as the leading scorer for Marian with 17 points and was followed by Mike Sabatka who added 16. Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids, the Hurricanes ran into a red hot ballclub that had won its first five games of the season. Rapids scored 24 points in the first quarter and was never headed winning 85-62. Truckenbrod again led Marian in scoring with a 31- point effort, his biggest output of the season. Teammate Mark Thompson contributed 10 points.
