DECEMBER*. 1M1 With snow in the forecast, the seventh annual "Rescue SO" snowmobile marathon planned for January 10,1962 is in the final planning stages. The Harmony Snowmobile Club will again sponsor the 50 mile ride to raise funds for the McHenry and Johns burg Resue Squads. Last year the snowmobilers raised over $8200.00 for the rescue squads, and the goal for 1962 is set at $10,000.00. Club President Frank Meisner announced lhat the top pledge rider for the last five years, Jim Wright, will lead the riders. Each year riders ask for pledges of 10 cents or more per mile to raise funds for this worthy cause. The Harmony Snowmobile Club will be joined by other riders from the McHenry Snowballers, The Moose. Sno-Birds, Sno-Trackers of Harmony, Hebron Penguins, Wonder Lake Lakers, and the Polar Pairs od Spring Grove. The ride is open to all snowmobilers and state certified riders under 16 accompanied by a parent. Registration is at 8:00 a.m. at Raymond's (in John- sburg) Peer Inn and the starting time for the Marathon is 9:00 a.m. Leaving Johnsburg, the 100 estimated snowmobile entries will head north to Spring Grove, Richmond, then to Hebron, Wonder Lake, and return to the starting point for refresh ments. For more information, contact Jim Wright at 385- 9448, Judy Mazrin at 344- 2929, or Dale Pitts at 385- 2331. Preparing for the seventh annual "Rescue 50" snowmobile marathon are from left to right: Dale Pitts, co-coordinator; Judy Mairin, publicity; Dave Zamastil; McHenry Rescue Squad Chief; Joe Eisele, Crime Prevention Officer for McHenry County Sheriff's Police; Jim Wright, coordinator; Don Benti, Johnsburg Rescue Squad; and George Landholt, McHenry Rescue Squad member. The marathon raised over $8000.00 last year to benefit both McHenry and Johnsburg Rescue Squads, and the 1982 projected goal has been set at $10,000.00. The McHenry County College Fighting Scots took a disappointing fall as they lost their home opener Saturday to the Morraine Valley Community College Rebels 95-39. Weak passes and tur novers plauqed the Scots during the first half, as the Rebels took an early lead making 15 out of 27 shots. The Scots put the ball up for 21 shots, but only managed five baskets giving them a 35-16 halftime score. The Scots ran into foul trouble during the second half as players John Dunne and Henry Glick both fouled out. The Rebels were able to move way out in front as guard Steve Krueger shot nine for nine from the free throw line. Krueger led all scorers with 31 points. Scot's center Chuck Novy put forth a valliant effort as he contributed 18 points, while guard Dave Schachtner added 10 points to the Scots score. McHenry County college opened its 1981-82 basketball season playing its first home game in the college's new gym. This is the first basketball game played on the college campus in the history of MCC. The Scots record drops to 0-3,. Parks f Recreation Marian Girls 0-2 Marian Central's girls basketball team dropped its first two games of the season last week, at home against Grant "and at Wisconsin R a p i d s A s s u m p t i o n Cathiolic high school. High scoring Stephanie Romic led Grant to a 55-38 win as she poured in 28 points Tuesday night. Marian had led after one quarter of play 12-11 due to the shooting of Debbie Liggett who had seven points in the first eight minutes. The Hurricanes extended their led to 14-11 on a Liggett layup to start the second quarter, but then it was Romic's heroics that turned the game around. The senior center con nected on a free throw to put Grant within one point, then scored on a breakaway layup to tie the score at 5:30 remaining in the half. At 4:05 she scored on a reverse layup to put the Bulldogs ahead 16-14 and give them a lead they would not relinquish. Romic and teammate Maura King added two more field goals apiece as Grant outscored Marian 13-6 in the quarter and took a 24-18 halftime lead. Romic finished with 13 points in the first half. Following Liggett's layup which started the quarter, Grant's man-to-man defense shut out the Hurricanes until only 1:31 remaining when Leslie Vanderkarr scored a field goal. In the second half, matters went from bad to worse for Marian as starters Liggett and Beth Penza both fouled out. Liggett finished with a team leading 15 points, while Penza was held scoreless. Holly Ryan picked up the slack scoring eight of her 11 points in the second half, but Romic continued to have the hot hand for Grant as she pumped in 15 second half points. The Bulldogs put the game away in the fourth quarter outscoring the Hurricanes 19-8. King finished with 10 points and Jean Neumann added eight for the winners. Saturday at Wisconsin Rapids, Marian again had its problems falling 41-29. After hosting Huntley Tuesday night, the Hurricanes will be at Richmond-Burton on Saturday, Dec. 12.
