PAGE 1C-PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY, DECEMBER 11.1981 Declare Farming Under Siege Pointing out that fanning is under siege from many directions because of high interest rates and lower farm prices, Stanley Steagall general manager of McHenry FS, told 570 guests at the seventeenth annual meeting last week that the negative factors affecting farmers also affect their company. "Never has the double barrelled effect that interest rates have on farming been more evident than with the recent drop in farm prices and farmer net income," he observed. "First, the farmer pays more for his capital. This hurts and affects his net income from an operating standpoint. At the same time high interest rates cause the dollar to strengthen. That raises the price of foreign currency other nations must use to buy U.S.-raised crops. On top of that a world recession sets in." But Steagall said with interest rates appearing to go down, a turnaround should occur and foreign buyers should be back in the market for U.S. grains because our low commodity prices are attractive despite the depressed foreign currencies. "We have reduced the number of employees but those remaining must be more efficient. "The new cash discount program in petroleum has had a desired affect with McHenry FS having fewer dollars in capital invested. That means the amount borrowed as capital comes within the guidelines of the St. Louis Bank for Cooperatives," he con tinued. McHenry FS closed two bulk petroleum plants and made a change in its petroleum delivery service program. The annual meeting was for a shortened eight-month fiscal year because of a change approved earlier in the year which had the previous fiscal year ending July 31. Steagall said generally sales and net in come compared favorably with the previous fiscal year if projections for the final four months of the current fiscal year are accurate. In the election of directors, three incumbents were reelected: Lester Guenther and Carroll Loh- meyerWoodstock; and Mike Hogan, Ringwood. Guenther farms 220 acres west of Woodstock and raises 2,000 hogs a year in a swine operation in con junction with his brother, George. Hogan farms 2,000 acres west of Ringwood with his father, John, and his brother, Harry. They have a 70-cow dairy herd. Loh- meyer has a 500-acre grain farm northwest of Wood stock. \ R i c h a r d W a l t e r s , president, presided during the annual meeting \which was held in a colorfully decorated banquet room at the Abbey, Fontana, Wis., with a Christmas theme highlighting the surroun dings. The increase and other improvements in veterans benefits are the result of a law signed by President Reagan Oct. 17. It provides for an average 11.2 percent increase in VA compensation rates for service disabled veterans, and dependency and in demnity compensation rates for surviving spouses and children of veterans. VA officials said the in creased amounts were not reflected in the regular November checks, but were provided by means of sup plemental checks. The full amount of the increase will be included in the single monthly check, beginning in December. The rate boost means an increase from $54 to $58 per month for a veteran with a disability rated at 10 per cent. A veteran with a 50 percent disability will receive $328 a month, up from $291, and a veteran with a 100 percent disability will receive $1,130 a month, up from the current $1,016. The legislation also in creases the annual allowance made to certain veterans whose artificial limbs cause wear on their clothing. It goes from $274 to $305. VA's assistance allowance toward the purchase of a s p e c i a l l y a d a p t e d automobile or other eligible vehicle by certain han dicapped veterans was in creased by the new legislation to $4,400 from $3,800. In another area, the legislation increases to $35,000 the maximum amount of Servicemen's Group Life insurance and Veterans' Group Life in surance that may be pur chased by eligible veterans. The legislation also perm- tis VA to guarantee, for the first time, graduated- payment home mortgage loans, and it increases to $32,500 the assistance the agency may provide to certain disabled veterans for adapting their residences to, for example, the requirements of wheelchair- bound individuals. VA officials emphasized that full details of all changes in the compensation regulations and eligibility requirements are available by contacting the nearest VA regional office. 176 176 Mother: Billy!
