The f-1 forward was named to the first team of the SHARK conference squad and was also awarded first team AU-McHenry Country laurais in Class A. He netted his career high in January with 31 points agahist South Beloit. Johnsburg finished the year with a 17-11 record. Johnsburg's boys basketball team won the consolation championship of the Northern Illinois Classic by defeating Harvard 68-66 in double overtime. Johnsburg improved its record to 10-4 with the win over Har vard. 1 The Skyhawks' Rick Neiss scored 26 points in the finale and totaled 99 points for four games. He was selected to the all-tournament team. Marian's boys basketball team was defeated by Harvard in the semi-finals 71-7®. McHenry's girls basketball team was beaten twice in the North Chicago holiday tournament. The Lady Warriors lost to Forest View 51-35 and also to Lake Forest 56-24. Brian Wrona, a senior member on McHenry's wrestling team, raised his record to 18-2 with a championship in the 119 weight class at the Rockford- Boylan Invitational Wrestling Tour nament. He accomplished his feat by recording four straight wins. Team mate Vic Betancourt placed fourth in the 155 weight class and improved his record to 13-4-1. Vince Lloyd, voice of the Chicago Cubs, emceed the annual "Hit and Run" baseball banquet for the John sburg Oldtimers Club, marking the fifth • consecutive year that a radio per sonality headed Uie festivities. Alsu »n hand were Dennis Lamp of the Cubs and Mike Squires of the White Sox. Rick Neiss scored a career high 31 points as Johnsburg romped past South Beloit 76-58 in a SHARK conference game. Despite three quick baskets in the last three minutes by the masked wonder, Sue Dehn, Johnsburg's girls basketball team fell to the Wauconda Bulldogs 43-40 in the final game of the Johnsburg Girls Basketball Tour nament. Dehn, a junior who was banned from play in an earlier game because she was wearing a hockey mask to protect her broken nose, got the O.K. to per form in the tournament. In an earlier tournament game against Grayslake, Dehn led Johnsburg to a 47-41 victory by scoring 18 points and also establishing a new free throw record by making seven of 12 charity tosses. Santa Arrives! It was a big day in the park last Saturday when Santa made his first appearance in McHenry. Along with Mrs. Santa, he is shown distributing candy to local youngsters. Excitement ran high, and all through the afternoon, little ones paid the big man in the red suit a visit inside his cheery hut. Scasny ranks first in the league in scoring averaging 24.3 points per game although his team has yet to win. McHenry's wrestling team won a double dual match at Cary Grove to assure coach Mary Sobczak of a win ning season. The Warriors defeated Mundelein Carmel 31-27 and Lake Zurich 38-35 to bring their record to 8-5- 2 with only two matches remaining. Brian Wrona is now 24-2-1 and Vic Betancourt stands 16-6-1. McHenry's boys basketball team started the month at 6-4 and is now 10-6 with a pair of weekend wins. The Warriors of Ken Ludwig edged Crystal Lake South 61-60 behind Bob teller's 27 points and also won a non-conference tilt against Zion Benton 60-58. At the end of January, Crown rests at the top of the Fox Valley conference with a perfect 7-0 record,, while McHenry is tied for second place with both Crystal Lake schools at 4-3. Bob Greve ranks first in the con ference in scoring with 140 points (20.0 ave.). At the end of January, Johnsburg's boys are 4-4 in the SHARK conference and 12-8 overall. The Skyhawk girls are 1-4 in the SHARK and 5-6 overall. In Parks and Recreation basketball, Christopher's-Little John's recorded the biggest slaughter of the year in their 100-37 drubbing of the Over The Hill Gang. Seven players scored in double figures. FEBRUARY Johnsburg's boys basketball team dropped below the .500 mark in con ference play with a 66-64 loss to Hononegah. The Skyhawks are 4-5 in the SHARK, but are 12-9 overall. Johnsburg's girls basketball team dropped a 44-31 decision to Marian Central putting the Skyhawks at 5-7 for the year, while the Hurricanes im proved to 9-2. McHenry's boys basketball jumped to 16-7 during the month of February. The Warriors opened the month by defeating Hoffman Estates 38-33, holding the opposition to an un believable seven points in the entire second half. McHenry suffered a 69-47 loss to Crown along the way as All-Fox Valley forward Gary Gliesman of the Vikings had 27 points. The win clinched the conference title for Crown, which upped its record to 10-0. McHenry dropped to 7-3. The Warriors closed out the month with their 15th and 16th wins of the season topping Dundee 67-61 and Crystal Lake Central 62-57. Against dee,-<a*4tfarrtors overcame an 11- * point deficit at intermission to win. Bob Greve led the winners with 19 points and $ob Zeller added 17. Against the Tigers, Bob Zeller put on an offensive display scoring 28 points lfor an appreciative Parents Day crowd. "We just played a tremendous game the second half, both on offense and defense," said coach Ludwig. Montini's grade school volleyball team, coached by Carol Wills, won three games in the first week topping St. Thomas, St. Joseph and St. Bede. Bill Scasney netted 36 points for the Over The Hill Gang in a losing cause gainst River Shannon which prevailed 53-52 in Parks and Recreation basketball. Scasney improved his scoring average to 33.5 points per game although his team stands 0-6. Adding another three vitories to his impressive season record, McHenry wrestler Brian Wrona took the championship in the 119 pound weight class at the Fox Valley conference wrestling tournament held at Crystal Lake South. Wrona, a senior, improved his record to 29-2-1 with seven of those wins being by falls. McHenry's girls basketball team trailed Jacobs 17-7 then rallied for a 51- 46 win over the Golden Eagles. The Warriors notched their second con ference win of the season against six defeats, but at the end of the month the Lady Warriors would be 2-8. Mike Shanahan's boys swim team defeated Fox Valley foe Dundee 114-44. McHenry had two double winners, Wade Cepulis in the 200 and 500 freestyle, and Keith Gregg in the 100 fly and 100 backstroke. \ The 1980-81 McHenry seventh grade girls basketball team completed a highly successful season boasting an 11- 0 record. The Trojans took the fox Valley junior high conference cham pionship and recently finished on top in JW Johnsburg ^seventh grade ln- vHational* Tournament. McHenry averaged 34.5 points per game, while giving up an average of 11 points per contest. The SHARK conference begins to dwindle as Hononegah is accepted into the Big-9 conference for the 1982-83 school year. Already leaving the SHARK are North Boone, South Beloit, and Beloit Catholic. The SHARK will apparently be limited to five schools unless new members cannot be collected. Johnsburg considers joining the Big 8, the Northwest Suburban, and also becoming independent. Jackie Weber scored 26 points as Marians girls basketball team defeated Immaculate Conception 47-43 to maintain its first place spot in the WSCC with a 7-1 record. Marian Central's boys basketball team won its last regular season WSCC game of the year as Carl Brown netted 27 for the winners. The Hurricanes topped St. Fracnis 74-45. Brown, a 6'4" senior forward, was also crowned the WSCC's leading scorer averaging 23 points per game. In 11 conference games, Brown tallied 243 points. Teammate Brad Gregory was selected to the WSCC honorable mention team. Christopher's - Little John's won an overtime thriller over the Old Bridge in the battle for first place in Parks and Recreation basketball by a score of 60- 57. In the overtime period, the winners connected on eight of 10 free throws to lead them to victory. Gary Snell, who had six free throws in the overtime, tied Ken Ludwig for scoring honors for the winners. Mark Wilkinson had 20 points for the Old Bridge. Johnsburg's boys basketball team continued its jinx on the Hornets of Harvard by beating the Hornets for the third time this season, a 62-58 thriller in wartime. The Skyhawka month with a 6-6 mark in the SHARK conference and an overall record of 15- 10. Tom Pieper led Johnsburg with 19 points and Rick Neiss was right behind with 18 points. The Chicago Bears' "Honey Bears" were at Buckner gym for a volleyball game against a local team. Montini's volleyball team ended the month with a 7-1 mark with wins over St. Thomas and St. Bede. Johnsburg's girls basketball team, coached by Dan Stanowski, ended the month with a 2-7 mark in the SHARK and an overall record of 6-10 after splitting over the weekend The Skyhawks lost to South Beloit 78-62, but rebounded to defeat Hononegah 59-52.
