The Warrior field hockey team led by new coach John Sytsma dropped its opening contest 2-0 to Maine East. At Johnsburg, the football team had problems scoring points. The Skyhawks lost 14-6 in their seson opener at Grant as the 'Hawk defense accounted for the only points. Paul Smith fell on a fumble in the end zone with what proved to be the only Johnsburg points of the month. The Skyhkwks dropped to 0-3 after being shutout by both Grayslake 8-0 and Harvard 19-0. Kathy Bull took over as head volleyball coach at Johnsburg and her team had a slow September with a 3-3 record. The Skyhawks closed out the month losing to SHARK opponent Hononegah in straight sets. Marian Central's football team won its opener in Don Penza's debut 7-6 over St. Edward. In the Hurricanes first possession of the year, quarterback Don Rickert drove his team 72 yards in 14 plays for a score. His touchdown pass to end Scott Spengel and Spengel's extra point kick were the difference in the game. Marian lost the following week 14-3 at Crown, but rebounded to win its SHARK opener 23-20 at Hononegah as Spengel boflted §, gl-yardQ$d goaLwith drily 13 seconds' remaining. Marian's cross country team went 6-2 for the month looking as strong as the team that went to state in 1980. Jay Chapman won the Hurricanes' first race of the year at Crown, but brothers Tom and John Wottreng paced Hans Rokus' team for the remainder of the month. Mary Stoner's volleyball team was 5- 2 during September. The Hurricanes opened the season by defeating St. Edward and closed out the month by again beating the Green Wave in straight sets. Also recording a 5-2 month was the tennis team led by first-year coach Tom Burg. Number one singles player Ellen Miller, dropped her first two matches of the year, but then won her next five in a row to lead the Hurricanes. Marian Central Athletic Director Hans Rokus announced that the school would return to the West Suburban Catholic Caonference for the 1982-83 school year as the SHARK conference would be disbanded. OCTOBER McHenry's football team fell from the unbeaten ranks on the first weekend in October when Woodstock upended Joe Schlender's team 30-16 at Mc- Cracken field. On hand at the game were members of the 1961 Warrior championship team. McHenry defeated Cary Grove the next weekend 18-14, rallying from a 14-0 halftime deficit to win. Quarterback Doug Mullen ran for one touchdown and passed to Mladen Rudman for two more as the Warriors pulled out the win. Rodman's winning touchdown came on a 92-yard bomb. The Warriors ended the month with two losses to put their record at 2-3 in the Fox Valley conference and a 4-3 overall mark. McHenry lost its Homecoming game 21-12 to Dundee as Tom Wagner managed the only scores, and McHenry also was whipped at Crystal Lake Central 42-26 as the conference leading Tigers rolled up 429 yards total offense and Joe Malone scored four touch­ downs. Mladen Rudman rushed for 126 yards and scored two touchdowns to lead the Warriors. McHenry's cross country team suffered its first loss of the season as Crystal Lake Central edged Bill Hut­ chinson's crew 27-28. But from that point on, the Warriors were un­ stoppable. McHenry avenged its only loss the next weekend by winning the 16-team Crystal Lake Invitational. The Warriors then finished second at the Peoria Invitational which is con­ sidered a prelude to the state meet. Defending state champion Elmhurst York won the race with 47 points, and McHenry totaled 170. We Deliver * Hutchinson's team concluded its regular season with double dual wins over Woodstock-Cary Grove and Dundee-Crown to finish with a 14-1 record. McHenry won the McHenry County meet the next weekend in Woodstock scoring 31 points to edge out Central again who totaled 42. Wade Cepulis led the Warriors with a third place finish. Marian Central's Most Valuable tennis Player wa s senior Ellen Miller who at one point during the season won eight straight matches at number one singles. First- year coach Tom Burg led the Hurricane girls to a SHARK conference championship and a 8-3 overall record. Central again placed second With 41 points. Cepulis again won the race and the remainder of the scoring came from Chris Creutz, fourth; Gordy Bourey, fifth; Brian Wright, sixth; and Steve Carby, seventh. In total points for the season, the Warriors had 33 to edge out the Tigers who had 32. McHenry's girls finished third in the FVC scoring 25 points to trail Wood­ stock (35), and Crystal Lake South (28). Delia Saunders and Mary Bazan were Marian Central's cross country team made its fifth straight trip to State where it finished tenth in Class A. After opening with a 155-170 win over Dundee, the Warriors placed second in the 20-team Lake Forest Invitational as Steve Svec and Mike Bauml each shot a 79. Charlie Cuda's squad then captured the FVC by outshooting defending champion Crystal Lake South 326 to 330. Brad Adams led the Warriors with a 77. McHenry continued its dominance over South at the District meet at MCC by outshooting the Gators again 304 to
