During these slow winter days, take time to plan your garden so you're ready when civilized weather returns. Decide first on the size of your garden. Consider the amount of time you have to spend, how much produce you can use, and your skills. Beginning gardeners should start small. For single, working people, a container garden may be ideal. Next, choose a location. A well drained spot that receives a full day's sun is best. Avoid trees, which shade the garden and compete for water and nutrients. Some trees, such as walnuts, produce sub stances toxic to other plants. Select the crops you'll grow. Order seeds for radishes, onions, beans, and other easy-to-grow crops now. PESTICIDE CAUTION By Brian Sager Many producers are already selecting their pesticides for the coming growing season. When doing so, it is important to examine the product labels carefully and compare to determine which product will be the safest and most effective in controlling the undesirable pests. Pesticide labels are legal documents backed by scientific research and contain the information necessary to apply the chemicals safely and ef fectively. The trade name, common name and chemical name, as well as the percentages of each compound that affect plant and animal life are all stated on the labels. This in formation not only tells the consumer what is in the container, but is also useful to a physician in case of poisoning. Pesticide labels also provide the name and ad dress of the pesticide m a n u f a c t u r e r , t h e registration number in dicating that the product is registered with the U.S Environmental Protection agency, and the establish ment number which iden tifies where the pesticide was produced. Signal words appearing on the label indicate how toxic or poisonous the product is to man. The words, Danger - Poison, with a skull and crossbones, identify a highly toxic product. Warning means the pesticide is moderately toxic and caution indicates low or slight toxicity. The statement. "Keep Out of the R e a c h o f C h i l d r e n i s required on every pesticide label. Labels also give in formation on how to use the product Included are the plants, animals, or areas that can be treated; the pests that can be controlled, the amount of the chemical to be used; and how and when to apply the chemical for best pest control In addition, instructions on proper storage and disposal of the pesticide and its container are given. First aid instructions in case of poisoning are included, as is information concerning par ticular hazards possible to the environment, humans and other animals Warnings indicating if the product is flammable, explosive, or corrosive are also statec. The most important time spent in pesticide selection and application is reading the label.
