PAGE C - PLA1NDEALER • WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY >,11 V nsy m Warriors Split Over Weekend McHenry high school's basketball team split a pair of Fox Valley conference games over the weekend defeating Cary Grove 54-51 and losing to Jacobs 65-47. Coach Ken Ludwig's Warriors are now 3-6 in the FVC and 3-12 overall. Returning to the friendly confines of Buckner gym Friday night, McHenry had to stand off a fourth quarter rally by the Trojans to hold on for the victory. Missing the front end of four one and one situations, plus a two shot foul almost led to a Warrior defeat as the Trojans came roaring back from a 15-point deficit to almost pull out the game. McHenry grabbed a 4-0 lead on field goals by Mike Bauml and Mike Burgdorf, but then hit a cold spell as Cary came roaring back with seven unanswered points. Bill Hermann's basket at 1:15 gave the Warriors their final points of the quarter, and after another scoring spree by the Trojans, McHenry trailed 14-8. In the second period, McHenry played perhaps its best ball of the season. Hermann's two quick baskets got the Warriors started and before you knew it they ran off 14 straight points to grab a 22-14 lead. McHenry held its own for the rest of the period and took a 28-20 lead at internission. The concession stand area was really buzzing during halftime about the fine play of the locals during (he second quarter. The Warrior defense held the Trojans at bay during the period, and the quickness of the Warrior fast break made it look easy. McHenry continued its dominance in the third period as Bauml hit from the outside, Burgdorf, Randy Lively, and sophomore Mark Peterson connected from short range, and the locals stretched their lead to 44-29 after three periods of play. Then disaster struck the Warriors. In a span of 1:54, the Trojans ran off 13 unanswered points and only trailed 44-42. • Burgdorf then made a free throw and Lively hit a 15- footer to give McHenry a little breathing room at five points, 47-42. Then the Warriors failed to take advantage of Trojan fouls, missing three straight from the front end of a one 7 fr°m McHenry guard Mike lead Ken Ludwig's team to a 54-51 victory Friday night. Both teams traded baskets and Cary was still in the ballgame. Steve Babb's two free throws at 1:15 put the Warriors ahead 52-45, and Bauml's two charity tosses gave them a nine-point bulge. The Trojans stormed back with three baskets of their own, and for the quarter outscored the Warriors 2210, but time ran out and McHenry chalked up its third conference victory of the year. Coach Ludwig was not pleased with his team's poor free throw shooting, 8-for-21, but he was pleased with his squad's overall defensive effort. Burgdorf led a balanced scoring attack for McHenry with 14 points, and Hermann and Bauml finished with 12 each. LOSE AT JACOBS Saturday night, the Warriors traveled to Jacobs where they lost 65-47 to the Golden Eagles in a game a lot closer than the score indicated. The hosts jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first five minutes and the Warriors first got on the board when Peterson banked one off the glass at the 3:00 mark. Gary Freund, substituting for Burgdorf who had to sit with three quick fouls, connected for two field goals as McHenry trailed 13-6 at the end of the first quarter. In the second period, the Warriors hustled their way into the ballgame as Her mann, Freund, Bauml, and Peterson contributed to the scoring attack and the Golden Eagles lead was shortened to 26-19. In the third period, -toCobs used its big.. men, Mike Lange and Tom Schaefer to its advantage. Lange at 6-4 and Schaefer at 6-6 scored on some easy baskets inside to keep the Golden Eagles on top. But the Warriors behind the shooting of Freund, Babb, and Peterson stayed within striking distance and trailed only by five points 39- 34 at the end of the third quarter. The final eight minutes were plain disaster for the local crew. Lange and Schaefer scored on some easy baskets and suddenly the Warriors were down by 10 points. They made their last spurt of the night as Hermann scored and Bauml connected twice to cut the difference to 49-43 midway through the period. But in the closing four minutes, Jacobs outscored McHenry 16-4 to record the victoiy The Warriors gave it all they had, but couldn't cope with the size of Lange and Schaefer when the chips were down. Lange led all scorers with 22 points and Schaeffer finished with 17. Freund topped the locals with 14 points. McHenry will host rival Woodstock Friday night. The Blue Streaks, who defeated the Warriors 63-35 erlier this season, are just one game behind conference leader Crystal Lake South. There should be a good crowd on hand to see these old rivals play as they always put on a good show for the fans in attendance. With the victory, the Skyfyawks improved their overall record to 6-12 while the Green Giants dropped to 2-13. "It was a real good game for us," said Johnsburg coach Ben Beck. "It gave us the chance to have everybody play and give us some confidence going into a tough week." The Skyhawks will tangle with Fox Valley opponent Algonquin Jacobs on Tuesday night, play a SHARK conference rematch at Marian Central on Friday, then travel to Rockford Lutheran on Saturday. Ten of the 11 Johnsburg players scored in the rout of Hebron led by Tom Pieper who netted 23 points. Jeff Fowler, the hero in Tuesday's win against Harvard, followed with 18 points, Paul Metzger added 15, and Joe Meyers sank 14, marking the third game in a row he hit for double figures. The Green Giants had trouble getting on track in the first quarter against the Skyhawks' full court pressure defense and trailed 22-16 after the first eight minutes. Beck freely substituted his players and continued the press in the second quarter which caused several Hebron turnovers and several easy Johnsburg baskets. The Skyhawks led the Green Giants 47-31 at halftime and outscored the host school 22-10 in the third period to take a com manding 69-41 advantage with one quarter left to play. Playing with only seven upperclassmen and two sophomores, the un dermanned Green Giants were never able to catch up as the Skyhawks continually changed their defenses and brought in new people to continue the pressure defense.' Hebron's Dave Jacobson nonetheless led all scorers with 28 points including 21 of those coming in the first half. .. - . ••• - • But with 10 players getting into the scoring act, the Skyhawks collected 23 points in the final quarter to add this game to the record books. Johnsburg's final point total of 92 was the third highest in the school's four- year history. • Beck's team scored 101 points earlier this season against Northwest Military Academy and during the 1979-1980 season, Johnsburg tallied 93 points against South Beloit.
