Superstar Blazes In Wadler's Winter "Sky «f "Superstars", the new Winter Sky show which rtms through March 16 at the Adler Planetarium takes its names from a recently discovered, incredibly huge star. Some astronomers speculate that this amazingly bright star may have more in common with the very first stars formed in the universe than with stars like our sun. "Superstars" takes up the .question of the role that these brightest of stars may have played in setting the stage for life on earth and offers a possible explanation far the scarcity of super brilliant stars in the universe today. " Sky Show audiences will travel out 180,000 light years to the galaxy where the superstar was discovered. Along the way they will also make a stop in their own Milky Way galaxy to see the Orion Nebula, a gigantic cloud of hydrogen gas where new stars are being formed. But, according to Alder P l a n e t a r i u m S e n i o r Astronomer Phyllis Pithiga, these new stars, even the ones which astronomers call "supergiant" stars, are much smaller than the new superstar. Astronomers had to coin the term "superstar" to describe the "new" star because it is so much bigger, brighter and hotter than any other star known today. To demonstrate the dif ference between the superstar and ordinary stars Ms. Pithiga compares thcr superstar to the sun. "The superstar is 100 times the size of the sun and its volume is one million times greater. The bright ness of the superstar is comparable to 100 million ^ sons! 0 "Superstars blaze brilliantly but their lifespan is short compared to other, smaller stars. The superstar is blowing away at such a rapid rate, that it could evaporate completely in another million years. "By contrast, the sun has been shining for five billion years and is expected to continue for another five billion." Some astronomers believe ' that the very first stars in ' the universe may have been super brilliant stars similar to the newly discovered star. The theory is that these first stars Mazed brilliantly for a relatively short time, then exploded. In the heat of these ex plosions the hundred plus elements in nature were formed, making the for mation of the earth and all the life on it possible and setting in motion a process of star birth and galaxy creation which continues to this day. "Superstars" will run through Tuesday, March 16. Shows are Monday through Thursday at 2 p.m., Fridays at 2 and 8 p.m, and Satur days, Sundays and holidays at 11 a.m., and 1, 2, 3 and 4 p.m. For information about private group showings call 322-0329. The Adler Planetarium is located at 1300 South Lake Shore drive. Choosing Seeds by Erin Hynes Extension Adviser The 1982 seed catalogs are clogging your mailbox, and it's time to weed through the pretty pictures and select the seeds you'll grow this year. Here are some points to keep in mind as you make your choices. -Choose vegetables and flowers well adapted to this area. Contact the Extension office for specific recom mendations. -Unless you have facilities for starting plants indoors, choose seeds which can be sown outdoors. -Note the number of days to maturity or flower when setting your planting dates. Use varieties with differing maturity dates to get vegetables and flowers all summer long. -Choose compact, bush- type plants for small or container gardens. Skipsi corn, melons, and pumpkins which use a lot of space. -Know how much yield you'll get when deciding how much seed to buy. Beans and tomatoes are high yielding; broccoli and cauliflower are less so. -Choose disease resistant varieties when possible. Look for the letters VF, or VFN. -Don't grow root crops in a compact soil. -Buy only the seeds you'll need for this season. Stored . seeds lose their viability. -If you plan to can or freeze vegetables, choose the varieties best adapted to this use. That's quite a list to keep in mind. Of course, no single variety will be perfect. By making educated choices, you'll have a productive, successful garden. TRXES! Nobody likes them I Everybody hos to dool with thorn HELP!
