PAGE 4 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. FKBKi'ARY 5.1M2 "EARL WALSH" So I Hear It was a pleasant surprise to receive a phone call from our former Police Chief, Ken Espey, calling from way down in Dunedin. Florida. Ken reported nice weather after a couple of days around freezing. Yep. We read about that cold spell down there and didn't feel too badly about being way up here in the north. As a special prize, I am now the proud possessor of a book "How To Keep Fit For Life". After reading about skipping rope and doing pushups. I put the book aside Just reading about those exercises gives me a pain. For a long time reference was made to inflation. Now, all we hear is the state of the economy. There are SALE signs all over. Discounts go up to 50 percent. Some restaurants say buy one sandwich and get the other one free. There are some eatin' piaces that offer the second meal free if you pay for the highest priced one Just on special days. Automobile manufac turers and dealers are of fering big bonus checks Some months ago, I went up to pay the check after eating in a neighboring city and the cashier deducted a Senior Citizen discount on the check without a request from me. The McHenry Plaindealer (US«MS-M0) E.*oWI»h«l 1»75 McHvnqr Illinois 40050 PHon* 115-3*5-0170 When I asked her how she could tell I was a Senior Citizen, she just smiled. I suggested that if a person could afford to pay the check, the 10 percent should go into a jar to help feed some hungry family. We have jars to feed ducks and for many other causes. Why not for needy people? With a smile, the cashier answered, "I dunno. I just work here". Our feathered friends have a new rest or perch haven in our back forty. Alvina's brother, Vic Freund. loaded his Christ mas tree in the trunk of his car, brought it to us and stuck it in a snow bank. Must tie some goodies on the branches It isn't often we have our breakfast outside of our own kitchen As a change of pace, we went to 7 o'clock Mass, then down to see Blondie and Naomi at the Little Chef. It is surprising how many people are up and out so early in the morning. Bob Adams and his bride were there. So was Bill Wagner and many others. Best crack of the morning: "The early bird catches the worm, but you have to dig deep these days." M HELPING PAWS A ANIMAL WELFARE ASSOCIATION P O. Box 3p5*Crystal Lake Illinois 60014 (815)459-2641 ANIMAL RIGHTS by Bob Ransom Ethical trends in the man- animal relationship are often characterized by greed, the profit motive and a desire for personal pleasure. Ruth Harrison, a humane-rights activist comments, "Where ex ploitation involves suffering, a distinction must be made between positive cruelty- that which man inflicts knowingly, and passive cruelty-that which man inflicts, or allows to be in flicted for him, in ignorance of the facts. An organism will thrive as long as it receives no painful stimulus from which it cannot escape- it need receive no pleasant one Science has made it possible to treat animals as things, but because it is possible does it mean we have the right to do so?" Helping Paws does not believe that lack of stimulus is enough to fulfill its obligation to animals. The pleasant stimuli of care, food, shelter, and a bona fide nurturing, adoptive home are rights to which every animal is a natural heir. In Illinois, the Bill P. A. 78- 905, "Humane Care for Animals Act" is one of several bills stating animal rights. The act states that each owner shall provide any animal sufficient quantity of food and water, adequate shelter and protection from weather, veterinary care when needed and humane care and treatment. The act forbids abandonment or cruel and abusive treatment and has many other protective features. Although the law forms a basis for man-animal relationships it is up to each owner to enter into a relationship with rights for all. All pet adoptions must be validated by the signing of a contract along with the adoption fee which includes the cost of the spay or neuter surgery from a vet of HP's choice, or a deduction from the cost of the surgery if done by a vet of your choice. When adopting a pet through Helping Paws please, for your future reference, keep name, address and phone number of the person from whom you adopted pet. The stories reportedly re-introduce television audiences to the wealth and diversity of American humor. On the schedule for Sense of Humor, are "Any Friend of Nicholas Nickleby Is a Friend of Mine", based on a Ray Bradbury short story, directed by Ralph Rosen- blum and starring Fred Gwynne, air date, Feb. 9; and "Come Along With Me", adapted from an unfinished novel by Shirley Jackson, directed by Joanne Wood ward and starring Estelle Parsons, air date, Feb. 16,. They can be seen at 9 p.m. on channel 11. All films in the series were photographed entirely in northern Illinois, and, with few exceptions, the cast and crew for each film are Chicago-based. VA News (Editor's Note: Following are representative questions answered daily by VA counselors. Full information is available at any VA office. Q. - I am a World War II veteran who had Veterans Administration insurance at one time. I recently received a pamphlet saying I can receive a special insurance dividend on this cancelled insurance if I send $10. Is this legitimate? A. -- No. This is just another version of an old insurance hoax that has been circulating for years. The only dividends being paid by VA are to veterans who were issued participating policies and who have maintained the policies in a premium paying status. Q. - I am an honorably discharged veteran of World War II and have never ap plied for any benefits from the Veterans Ad ministration. Will the VA pay any benefit for burial expenses when I die? A. - Yes. VA will pay $150 for the purchase of a burial plot for any eligible wartime veteran not buried in a national cemetery. As of Oct. 1, 1981, an allowance of $300 is available to all veterans who at time of death were receiving, or entitled to receive disability compensation, and to all veterans receiving, or en titled to receive pension. Q. - Is it possible for me to pay my Veterans Ad ministration guaranteed home loan before it becomes due? A. - Yes. A VA guaranteed loan may be partially or fully paid at any time without penalty.
