Johnsburg is now 0-3 against three of the top four teams in the FVC with previous losses being to Woodstock and Crystal Lake Central The victory by Jacobs, now 12-8. also snapped a modest two-game winning streak by the Skyhawks who now stand 6-13 for the season We didn't do the things that we had to do to win tonight.' said a disappointed Ben Beck, coach of the Skyhawks "Our shot selection was poor and we didn't do the job on the boards " The Golden Eagles held a slight 33-27 edge in rebounding, but the big difference was the second and third shots that they worked for at the offensive end Jacobs hit the offensive boards for an incredible 19 rebounds Six-foot-six center Tom Schafer led the assault with 11 rebounds and &-foot-4 forward Mike Lange banged his way inside for nine caroms And there was a lot of banging going on inside Johnsburg committed 21 personal fouls and Jacobs was not cheated getting called for 20 of their own as the contest became a battle at the free throw line. "It wasn't a real pretty game to watch," added Beck. Lange opened the first quarter scoring with a five- footer off the glass, but then the lead changed hands four times before the Golden Eagles assumed control. Paul Metzger's two free throws with 0:58 gave Johnsburg what proved to be its last lead at 12-11. John Scime's basket before the period ended then put the Eagles ahead to stay 13-12 In the second period, Jacobs went into the bonus with only 1:30 elapsed as Johnsburg's Terry Boyer picked up his third foul Lange scored eight points in the period on three follow up baskets and a pair of free throws, and Craig Eberly scored seven points in cluding three charity tosses as Jacobs maintained its one-point lead at in termission. 28-27. Johnsburg also went into the bonus in the second quarter and made five of eight attempts to stay in the ballgame But the Golden Eagles came out firing in the second half, scoring six unanswered points for a seven-point, 34- 27 lead "That was probably the turning point in the game." said Beck Johnsburg was held to 11 points in the quarter, but Jacobs began to pull away scoring 23 points for a 51-38 lead with only one period left to play. Skyhawk forward Joe Meyers scored on a layup to begin the fourth quarter, but then Schafer retaliated with a stuff shot that seemed to take the life out of the host team. Moments later, Eberly added a three-point play (his second of three for the game) and the Golden Eagles had their biggest lead of the game at 56-42. Johnsburg trimmed the lead down to 10 points twice in the closing minutes, but couldn't get any closer than that as Jacobs salted the game away with six free throws down the stretch. Lange led all scorers with 22 points before fouling out in the fourth quarter. Eberly and Schafer also reached double figures for the Golden Eagles with<20 and 16 points, respectively. Jeff Bartmann had 15 points and seven rebounds, and Tom Pieper added 10 points to lead Johnsburg, although it never really got its offense on track. "We have to put this game behind us and start thinking about Marian Central." said Beck "We have to gather ourselves and get in the right frame of mind." Despite their 6-13 overall record, the Skyhawks are still very much alive in the SHARK conference as their 2-2 record ties them with Harvard (3-3) for second place. Marian is just a half game behind Johnsburg with a 2-3 league record as has revenge on its mind. The Hurricanes lost their first SHARK game 56-52 at Johnsburg earlier this year. On Friday night against Cary Grove after a first period six-point deficit they ran and shot during the next two periods for a 15-pt advantage. Even when the Trojans closed the gap to within two, the Warriors showed the old moxie and hung on for a 54-51 victory. Saturday's score against Jacobs is very misleading. Although the Warriors dropped the contest 65-47, they were only trailing 49-43 with tour minutes to go. Miscues, and not that many, but only at the wrong time, along with the hot shooting of the Eagles made the difference in the close game. McHenry along with Woodstock and Jacobs will be at the Belvidere regional in early March. I don't believe the pairings are out as yet, but I'll take a guess and pit the warriors vs. the Blue Streaks. This wul be a two night affair, with all four playing on Wednesday, and the finals set for Friday night. J " Rockford Sectional. The winner will advance to the Thanks to Gary Collins and his Crystal Lake South Gators, the Fox Valley conference is getting some state recognition. The Gators are listed 10th in the latest polls. The Gators have won 18 straight since an opening game loss at Lake Zurich. The Blue Streaks of Woodstock are ranked 28th in the state. Mike Shanahan's swimmers didn't fare too well as the 12-team Rockford Invitational last Saturday, but Wade Cepulis came up with a 4th place, for the only Warrior scoring. With a lot of the big schools participating, it has to be good experience for the youthful Warriors. Marty Sobczak takes his "Rassling Warriors" to Dundee this weekend for the Fox Valley meet. Not strong aa a team to win the meet, the Warriors should have some individuals that should place high in the scoring. Pat Wirtz's Lady Warriors have a couple of games on tap this week. Last night they were at Jacobs and tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. they host the Blue Streaks from Woodstock. Both are Fox Valley games and the Warriors hope to move up in the standings. A remainder to you Warrior fans, that the make up game with Libertyville will be here next Saturday night A chance to see one of the better teams in the Chicago area with 6'10" Rich Stanfel, who as a junior has the college scouts drooling already on his play. With the Blue Streaks in town tonight, we go back to the Regional tourney in March of 1961 when the Warriors won over the Streaks 53-47. The game played at Elgin high school pitted the two leading North Suburban scorers Roger Eckert of Woodstock, and Paul Morenz of the Warriors. Each led his team in scoring, with Eckert's 17 not enough, to overtake the Warriors.
