I It's do-or-die Illinois high wrestlers. District competition begins tonight in both Class AA and Class A, and for the first time this season there will be no tomorrow. This year the top three finishers, instead of two as in previous years, in each respective weight class will advance to Sectionals. But for those that don't qualify for the final three spots, this weekend will mark the end of a season, and for seniors the end of a prep career. Three area high school, 1 f McHenry, Johnsburg, and Marian Central, will run the gauntlet tonight. McHenry heads to Woodstock with a young team, dominated by sophomore members. The Warriors, led by seventh-year coach Marty Sobczak, finished the season with a 0-7 record in the FVC and a 1-15 overall mark. During the year McHenry accumulated a handful of wins, but a late-discovered ineligible wrestler resulted in several meet forfeits. The Woodstock district will include exclusively the eight FVC schools, and the Warriors already are familiar with their com petition. McHenry opposed the seven schools in the FVC meet held last week at Dundee and finished seventh as a team. On The Court: McHenry Here For Two McHenry in a rare weekend will play two home games. Tonight the Warriors host Crown in a FVC en counter and tomorrow night they face Max Sanders' powerful Libertyville Wildcats. McHenry is riding a three- game losing streak and is coming off a poorly played 58-40 game at Crystal Lake Central Tuesday night. The Warriors dropped to 3-8 in the FVC with that loss and 3- 14 overall. The Vikings, however, won their first conference game against those same Tigers last Friday and will be looking for win number two tonight. Crown is coming off Tuesday night's loss against Cary Grove and stands MO in the FVC and 7-14 overall. In the first meeting bet ween the Warriors ami the Vikings, McHenry prevailed 72-62 at Crown. Mike Bauml and Mike Burgdorf each tallied 16 points to lead the locals. LIBERTYVILLE HERE Tomorrow night Warrior fans will get to see a tall and very talented Wildcat crew from Libertyville. The Wildcats won a come from behind thriller last week 64-62 over North Chicago to remain two games in front in the North Suburban conference. At 6-10, senior Rich Stanfel is the mainstay of the Wildcat attack, however, coach Max Sanders also has a couple of 6-5 players to help on the boards. This may be the last game between these two old rivals as conference * com mittments in the future make some changes necessary. Libertyville is now 17-3 for the year and has all but clinched the North Suburban title. Dick Rabbitt Johnsburg Hosts A Pair Johnsburg high school will attempt to snap a three- game losing streak this weekend when it closes out its regular season home schedule with two SHARK conference opponents. Friday night the Skyhawks will seek revenge against conference leading Marengo. The Indians, 5-1 in the SHARK and 11-8 overall, defeated Ben Beck's team 53-41 earlier this season on their home court. Dennis Hansen paced Marengo in that game with 23 points and 13 rebounds. The Indians are coming off their first conference loss of the season as the Harvard Hornets stung them 53-38 last Friday night. Johnsburg will meet Hononegah for the first time this season Saturday night. The Indians were to have met the Skyhawks on January 15, but the cold weather suspended the game. The Indians have yet to win in the SHARK in five attempts although they gave Marian Central all it could handle Tuesday night before bowing 66-65 on a last-second shot. Overall, Hononegah is 7-10. Johnsburg stands 2-3 in the SHARK and 6-15 overall, and has four of its six wins on its home court. Skyhawks' Tom Pieper and Jeff Bartmann have been the only two players to lead the team in scoring in 1982. Marian Has Road Tests Marian Central takes a break from SHARK con ference action this weekend when it hits the road for a pair of non-conference games. Friday night the Hurricanes will be at Rock- ford-Boylan, and on Saturday they will travel to Marmion. Marian is coming off a 66- 65 win %ver Hononegah Tuesday night as Chuck basket with four seconds to difference. play was the Tuesday Hartlieb's lest Are you overlookin one of the retirement savings plans ever created? ILLINOIS The top Warrior to place at conference was 138-pounder Scott Schmidt who took third. Five other Warriors placed fourth in their respective weight classes. One of only three seniors on the squad, Schmidt has one of the best records on the team at 16-8. The other top performers are sophomore Steve Carby who is 14-5 at 105, and senior Dan Gark who stands 18-10 in the 155 division. Two other Warriors have better than .500 records. Senior Eric Karpinski is 6-5 at 98 pounds, and sophomore Rick Connor is 13-11-1 in the 112 weight class. The remaining spots will be filled by Bob Sarabia (126), Mike Love (132). Mike Connor (145), Tom Kucek (185), and Jeff Greany (HW). McHenry will have no entry in either the 119 or the 167 weight classes. John Clewis was expected to wrestle at 167, but he is sidelined with injury. The opening bouts will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday night with the semi-finals and finals to conclude on Saturday. Johnsburg brings a much improved team to Harvard as compared to last year's squad. In the first year of the program, the coach Don March's Skyhawks finished 3-10, but this season they achieved a record of 8-6. Mike^Hurckes owns the top Johnsburg record with a mark of 19-3. The junior co- captain will be competing in the 132 weight class. The Skyhawks have another standout performer in senior Mike Dalan who boasts a 17-4 record and will be competing at 185. The other co-captain is senior Joe Kalisek, a talented wrastler who will miss further competition due to injury. His spot in the 138 weight class will be filled by sophomore Norman Rokosz who has no varsity record to date. Other Skyhawks with a .500 or better record include Lars Swanson, 9-9 at 112; Dave Moravec, 7-5 at 126; Brett Everett, 13-7 at 145; and John Grenman, 8-4 at heavyweight. The remainder of the classes will be filled by Guy Bazilweich (98), Mike Cahill (112), Ken Pedraza (119), Bentley Treat (155), and Martin Dreyer (167). Marian Central also achieved a winning record this year as first-year coach Mike Garvey led the Hurricanes to a 8-5-1 season. The top performer, for Marian is Tom Scher- merhorn, the lone senior squad member who com piled a 21-3-1 record. While westling most of the season at 132, Schermerhorn will drop dowri to 126 for districts. The lighter weight divisions appear to be the Hurricanes strength. Mark Wohnrade boasts a splendid 19-5-1 record at 98, and teammate Kevin McConville stands 15-8-1 at 105. Jeff Nuhsbaum at 112, and Kevin Niedospial at 155 have winning records also. Nuhsbaum stands at 13-12 and Niedospial is 13-10-1. Others that will be com peting are Mike Herff (119), Steve Stilling (132), Tony Piwowarczyk (185), and Rich Kelly (Heavyweight). The Hurricanes will suffer without wrestlers in three weight classes, however. John Nebel is out with an injury at 145, Andy Orlos is out at 138, and 167 will also be vacated. Hosting the meet, the Harvard Hornets are heavily favored to win their ninth straight district tournament. Since state wrestling was divided into two classes in 1974, the Hornets have yet to loset their own district. Other competing schools besides Marian Central and Johnsburg include: Elgin-St. Edward, Geneva, Hamp shire, Alden-Hebron, Maple Park-Kaneland, Richmond- Burton, Valley Lutheran, and Wheaton Christian. The Class A meet also begins at 6:30 p.m. Friday with competition to conclude on Saturday. STAFF PHOTO - WAYNE GAYLORD Another gale force for the Hurricanes on Tuesday was Scott Truckenbrod who popped in 30 joints to lead all scorers. The occasion also marked the fifth time this season that the senior guard has scored at least 30 points in a game. With the win, Marian improved its record to 4-3 in the SHARK and 10-7 overall.
