Name Malone New Director Senior Council The McHenry County Senior Citizens' council announced Sunday the sel­ ection of R. Daniel Malone. Crystal Lake as the councils' executive director. Malone's employment for the position was approved at a special session of the Board of directors held Feb. 12. , Malone, formerly of McHenry, brings to the position a knowledge of McHenry county, business and management ex­ perience, skill in govern­ mental programs, and an interest in the welfare of senior citizens. He will assume his duties March 1, but will work with the present director, Linn Olesen, for the intervening two weeks to provide a continium of program ad­ ministration and coor­ dination with local and federal funding sources. Designate Hospital As Eye Donor Center The Veterans Ad­ ministration reminds all veterans that VA benefits are not taxable and should not be reported on 1981 Federal income tax returns. Memorial hospital at Woodstock has , been designated an eye donor center, and the Woodstock Lions club has donated an enucleation kit, Lee Peace, executive director at Memorial hospital,s has announced. The program is affiliated with the Lions of Illinois eye donor registry, Lynn Stuart, program chairman in Woodstock, said, as he an­ nounced plans to seek eye donor pledges from residents in this community. Chuck Vitellaro, Lions president, and Rich Robertson, hospital human resources director who is a Lions club member, ac­ companied Vitellaro in presenting the kit to Dr. A. K. Sircar. Dr. Sircar is one of five hospital physicians who will be available to remove an eye within six hours after the death of a donor. Other doctors assisting with the program include Dr. Frank Elmudesi, Dr. J. T. Berres, Dr. S. Bobba and Dr. G.P. Daly. "Corneal transplants to help people see are an im­ portant medical tool in the fight against blindness," said Stuart. "Eye tissue is in short supply in Illinois, and there are few better ways to have a living memorial than to pledge your eyes so that others may see." Eye tissue not used for corneal transplants is utilized for specialized grafting procedures and medical research. Valentine, Rich­ mond, assistant director, M c H e n r y C o u n t y Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (MCESDA) recently received his credentials as a certified Senior Fire instructor from the National Emergency Training center, Em- mitsburg, Md. The course of instruction taught how to effectively organize and teach a course. Prior to certification, Valentine had to demon­ strate competency by making two presentations which were evaluated by the instructors. To attain this Senior in­ structor rating necessitated his attendance for a four- week period at the Maryland facility. His attendance was partially funded by the Federal Emergency Management agency. John J. Shay, director, MCESDA, said that although the certification was for Senior Fire instructor, the knowledge could be applied to any phase of Emergency Management instruction. As an example, as a part of his MCESDA duties, he is responsible for severe weather spotters in McHenry county. He is currently designing a course that will instruct police, fire, rescue and other ESDA volunteers on how to recognize tornadoes and report on other severe weather conditions. Johnsburg Junior High Schedules Conferences Johnsburg Junior high school has scheduled parent- teacher conferences for the week of Feb. 22 through Feb. 26. Specific days and times set aside for conferences during that week are Thursday, Feb. 25, from 6:30 to 9 p.m., and Friday, Feb. 26, from 8 a.m. to 3p.m. Students will not attend school Friday, Feb. 26. Doug Maris In Speech Tourney Doug Maris, a senior at West campus high school in McHenry, has qualified for the Illinois High School association speech tour­ nament in Bloomington, Friday, Feb. 19. He qualified in Dramatic Interpretation with his performance of a cutting from Brian Clark's Whose Life Is It Anyway? To qualify for the state contest, a contestant must place at least third in the district tournament and at least third in the sectional tournament. Doug placed third at the district tour­ nament at Warren high school Feb. 6, and second at the sectional tournament held at Dundee high school Feb. 13. Qualifying for the state tournament puts Doug in the top 18 speakers for his event.
