Even youngsters of tix or seven can be taught the fandamentals of golf and -can get a head start on a sport they can enjoy for a lifetime. Golf touring pro and Spalding consultant Johnny Miller began his illustrious career as a caddy at the Olympic Country Club in San Francisco and most recently won the '81 L.A. and Tucson opens along with a second place finish at this year's Masters. Johnny, like most pro- golfers, started at an early age learning die skills that he has so masterfully exhibited at these tournaments. Golf has become a life-long sport for many people, but for children it can be a series of small challenges that gives them positive feedback and constant enjoyment. Improves motor skills Children can learn many skills, motor control and hand- eye coordination, if they are taught how at an early age. Adults who enjoy the game are in an ideal position to share their expertise during the warm summer months with children as young as six or seven. Membership in an expensive country club is not required. Driving ranges, putting greens or practice tees are available on public courses and a child can get some good putting practice by just using a paper cup on a low pile carpet. Equipment is an important element in the success of almost any endeavor. Quality clubs will last for many years and, un like many other sports, children do not outgrow their clubs every year. .
