Sexual Discrimination Claimed In Lawsuit Shaw Media News Service A five-count lawsuit c l a i m i n g s e x u a l discrimination in a deputy sheriffs job has been filed in federal court by Linda C. Schalz of Woodstock. Mrs. Schalz filed her complaint in connection with a jailer position she held in the McHenry County jail, Woodstock, where the 38- year-old deputy claims she was required to perform duties which were "discriminatory." Defendants named in the suit include McHenry County, the McHenry County Sheriff's Merit commission, Sheriff Hank Nulle and Deputy Sheriff George Corson. Mrs. Schalz is seeking reinstatement to a position commensurate with her seniority, back pay, lost overtime and benefits, and other damages, including $150,000 against Nulle and Corson personally. She is on a medical leave of absence from her deputy sheriff's position now, but has worked for the sheriff's department since 1974. Her husband, Matthew, is a lieutenant on the sheriffs police complement. R o c k f o r d A t t o r n e y Michael Havrilesko is representing Mrs. Schalz and filed the suit in the western division of the federal court. He said it is very likely the suit will be heard in the court's eastern division in Chicago.' Havrilesko said Mrs. Schalz previously had filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity commission, which con ducted a preliminary hearing. He said a settlement was not reached and the charges were released to be filed in federal court. Mrs. Schalz claims "in tentional and willful em ployment discrimination" in violation of the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Pay Act. She also charges deprivation and interference with her civil rights. The suit alleges that as a female deputy sheriff she was "maliciously and willfully treated in an illegal, discriminatory manner by the defendants and their agents, by being transferred from her position as radio operator and replaced by a male for unlawful reasons." The complaint states Mrs. Schalz was denied shift transfer and overtime op portunities granted to similarly situated male deputy sheriffs and was subjected to verbal abuse and harrassment because of her sex. According to the charges, she was forced to take a leave of absence due to a discriminatory work order which would have required her to inspect the cells oc cupied by male prisoners during periods of personal hygiene in violation of Illinois county jail stan dards. The working conditions, the suit charges, caused Mrs. Schalz to become s e v e r e l y m e n t a l l y distressed, rendering her temporarily disabled from work. *%%%%%%%%%%%%%%xxsn • on said budget and ap propriation ordinance will be nela at 8:00 o'clock P.M. Feb. 26,1982) No. 820084 Legal Notice NOTICE Public Notice is hereby given that on February 17, A.D. 1982, a certificate w^s filed in the Office of the County Clerk of McHenry County, Illinois, setting fortn the names and post-office addresses of all of the per sons owning, conducting and transacting the business known as CLEAN SWEEP CHIMMENY SWEEPS, located at 1720 Highview, McHenry, IL., 60050. Dated this 17th day of February, A.D. 1982. Rosemary Azzaro, County Clerk (Pub. Feb. 26, Mar. 5& Mar. 12,1962) No. 820087 • * * * Most people bow down and worship the individ ual who, they think, can do them the most good. Keepin' Healthy At what age should you take your child to the dentist for the first time? When he or she is two-and-a-half to three years old. Many people think that because children only have baby teeth until they are about six years old, there is no need to take them to a dentist. They feel that ^ince the child is going to lose the baby teeth anyway, there is no need to try to save them. There are several reasons why the Illinois Department of Public Health's Dental Division encourages you to protect those teeth. It's true that your child is still a baby when his teeth first appear, but he should not lose the last of his baby teeth before he is 11 or 12 years old. If a tooth is lost too early, the teeth on either side of the empty space will eventually drift toward each other. Then, when the permanent tooth comes in, there is not enough space for it; so it cannot come in in its proper position. This is one cause of "crooked teeth," or malocclusion, as the con dition is properly called. Malocclusion causes other problems, too. For example, food is more likely to pack down in the spaces between the teeth, and this may result in more tooth decay. It may also cause gum disease. Baby teeth are necessary to help your child say words clearly so he or she can be understood. If he has teeth missing, or if they hurt him, he might not be able to chew foods which are good for him, such as apples. With your dentist's help, you may be able to prevent problems with your child's teeth. For one thing, your dentist will show you the proper way to clean your child's teeth. As soon as his baby teeth start growing in, you should start brushing and flossing your child's teeth - gently, of course. But at age two or so, he should be taught how to care for his own teeth, and you should see that he does this thoroughly at least once a day - and after every meal, if possible. While he is learning, you should con tinue to brush and floss for him at least once a day. If your child loses a primary tooth too soon, because of decay or an ac cident, your dentist may want to insert a space maintainer. This will hold the adjacent teeth apart so that the permanent tooth can erupt in the proper position. Your dentist will also want you to take special care of the six-year molars. When some permanent teeth start to grow in, they push the baby teeth out, but this isn't true of the six-year molars. They are the fjrst permanent teeth, and if is important that your child not lose them because they help the other permanent teeth grow in straight. Your dentist will also want to make sure your child is getting the protection of fluoride. This protection can be provided in several ways - - through your drinking water source, through a f l u o r i d e m o u t h - r i n s e program at school, through the use of a fluoride tooth paste or by direct ap plication by the dentist. If you want information on dental health programs in which the state health department is involved, please contact the Illinois Department of Public Health, Division of Dental Health, 535 W. Jefferson, Springfield, 111., 62761. It's good to have a slogan, but it's better to perform. Vci CONSUMER V CHECKLIST LAMPSHADE LINER Use lampshades with a white liner.
