f Warriors Seek To Upset Gators Tonight PAGE 7 - PLAINDEALER - FRIDAY. FEBRUARY 2t, 1162 The McHenry V will close out their regular season schedule tonight when Gary Collins brings his league-leading Crystal Lake South Gators to Buckner gym for an 8:00 p.m. contest. - The Gators, 13-0 in the Fox Valley conference and 22-1 overall, clinched first place in the conference last week With a thrilling 56-55 win over Crystal Lake Central last Friday. Jim Goodwin's two free throws with one second remaining won the game for South. It was the same Goodwin who shot a 15-footer in the closing seconds that beat Woodstock 51-50 a week earlier. The Gators will be without the servies of their 6-3 center Torn Dayton who will miss the remainder of the season due to mononucleosis. This is a serious blow to ColHnS with the upcoming state series beginning next week. Another doubtful player is playmaking guard Pat Corey, the Gators' sixth man who recently suffered a sprained ankle. On paper, however, it looks as If the Gators still have enough to take the Warriors to task. However stranger things have hap pened. With McHenry winning only three games this season (3-10 in the FVC & 3-18 overall), this would be the time to pull the upset of the year. The Warriors have nothing to lose and everything to gain with a win tonight, With two close games the past two weeks, the pressure is beginning to tell on the On The Sidelines By Dick Rabbitt The Warriors played a pretty good brand of basketball last Friday night only to fall one point short at Dundee. A fourth quarter rally just fell shot, and the Warriors had the opportunity, hut as in past games a miscue at the wrong time put them out of the game. Saturday night was a different story. They just couldn't get unwound against the ZeeBees. What Ken Ludwig could do with the talent on the ZeeBee squad. They have the makings of a fine ball club, but they need discipline, and plenty of it They too have wily one senior on the team, and should make some waves next season in the North Suburban, if they can get their act together. In looking over the area basketball figures, one can see why the Gators are successful. They have outscored then- opponents 68 to 50 through 23 games for an 18 point plus margin. The Blue Streaks have a 13 point advantage, and the Warriors have averaged 49 points to opponents 62 for a minus 13. Jacobs is minus 0.1 with a 14 and 10 record, while Marian Central is minus 0.5 averaging 61.5 to opponents 62. Scoring-wise, Scott Truckenbrod of Marian is averaging over 22 pts. per game, with a high of 40. I believe the young lad has scored 30 or more seven or eight times this season. That is shooting in anyone's league, and we are going to watch this young fellow against Richmond on Tuesday evening. (Editors Note: He scored 20 against Richmond). No state qualifiers in either wrestling or swimming for the Warriors. Luck of the draw always plays a factor at ». Pat Wirtz has his "Lady Warriors" playing their best brand of ball this season. The gals won two last week beating highly favored Crown 44-42, and then on Saturday with a fourth period splurge nipping Cary Grove 42-32. With a underclass squad of juniors and sophomores, the genial coach can look forward to next season to being a banner inner year for the Lady Warriors ie mother passing away of a very dear friend. Going down memory lane we take you back to the County Tourney at Harvard in 1957. The Warriors outlasted the Richmond Rockets 62-57 as Bob Christensen of the Rockets poured in 31 points in a losing cause. All but six area high school wrestlers had their seasons come to a close two weekends ago when District competition concluded. Another weekend has past and now their are no sur vivors. McHenry sent three wrestlers to the Class AA Sectional at Palatine; while Marian Central sent two and Johnsburg advanced one to the Class A Sectional at Piano. None of the six made it out of Sectionals for a trip to state. Here's a look at how the six wrestlers did: McHenry Eric Karpinski, the sleeper who emerged from the Woodstock Distrit with a championship in the 98 pound weight class, went farther than his two team mates at Palatine. The Warrior senior won his opening match 8-4 against Zion-Benton's Dave Schmidt, but then bowed out as he was pinned by eventual Sectional champion Ken Shepherd of Palatine. Although Karpinski became Shepherd's 21st pin of the year, the Palatine freshman was unstoppable as he also won by fall in his championship match to improve his record to 38-0. Karpinski finished the year with a 10-6 mark. In the 105 weight class, McHenry sent sophomore Steve Carby who took' third arWoodstock. In his opening bout, Carby suffered a 4-1 overtime loss to Wauconda's Tom Pitrowski. Pitrowski entered Sectional com petition with a 30-2 record and took third which earned him a trip to state. Carby finished the season with a 17-7 record, but as coach Marty Ssobczak noted, has improved over one year as he finished fourth in Districts last season. Dan Clark, at 155, was McHenry's third entry as he also took third at Woodstock. The senior was also eliminated from further competition in the first round as he was pinned by Wheeling's Dave Vollmer. Vollmer, who entered the competition with a 20-7 mark, eventually took fourth in the competition. Clark finished the season with a 21-12 record. "Anytime you get 20 wins it's an outstanding season," said Sobczak. Clark also led the Warriors in falls this season with 12 and was a co-leader along with Rick Connor (at 112) in take downs. "We're very young and hope to improve for next season, but it will take some work," said Sobczak. Marian Central Marian advanced two wrestlers to the Class A Sectional in Piano as both were runner-up at the Harvard District: 126- pounder Tom Schermerhorn and 98-pounder Mark Wohnrade. Schermerhorn , the Hurricanes' only senior wres t le r , defea ted Minooka's Dave Betswiser in his opening bout, but eventually lost dropping him into the consolation bracket. In his third place match with rival Shawn Gerard of Harvard, Schermerhorn led 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 going into the third. His lead was cut to 6-5 with 30 seconds remaining, then Gerard scored a two-point take down to earn his trip to state. Gerard was fourth in state a year ago at 119. Schermerhorn ended his season with a superb 26-6-1 record and has a sparkling two-year mark of 49-9-1. He is the only wrestler that first-year coach Mike Garvey will lose through graduation. Wohnrade, a sophomore, won his first match 2-0 against Clifton Central's Andy Paquete (16-0 coming in), but lost to Piano's Bob Baker in the quarterfinals. Baker went on to win the consolation championship, while Wohnrade finished the year at 20-7-1. Johnsburg Mike Hurckes, who took third in the Harvard District at 132 pounds, was the lone Johnsburg athlete to ad vance to Sectionals. The Skyhawk junior suffered an opening 8-0 loss to Providence's Scott Bessette to end his season with a 22-4 record. Hurckes, however, will return along with most of his teammates next season. The Skyhawks wi l l g raduate Mike Dalan, Brett Everett, and Joe Kalisek, leaving the major i ty of the weight classes to be filled by returning letterwinners. Carl Moesche Crash course!
