MARCH 3,1M2 Indians Beat 'Canes In Regional Final WOODSTOCK - Marian Central saw its season come to an abrupt end Friday night as Marengo whipped the Hurricanes 85-65 for the Class A Regional title. The victory earned the Indians (17-9) a Wednesday date against Winnebago (19- 9) in the Byron Class A Sectional. The Hurricanes finished their season with a 14-10 mark. After Marian defeated Marengo by a point one week earlier and breezed through the regional with a 72-64 win over Richmond and a 73-55 triumph over North Boone, few expected the game to be a blowout." "Maybe we were a little tired," said Hurricane coach Hans Rokus. He explained that Marian had played the previous night while Marengo was idle since Wednesday. "I'm very happy," said Indian coach Bill Barry. "Even though the scores don't indicate it, we played three tough games (in the regionals)." While Marian was only making 4-of-13 shots in the first quarter, the Indians hit their first five attempts and led 16-9 after one quarter. "We took it right to them," said Barry, who's team was the only team to win on .Marian's nqme court this season. Marengo stormed out to a 24-11 second quarter lead when Steve Waeghe tallied at the 3:55 mark. Marian finally scored its first field goal of the quarter 20 seconds later on a Scott Truckenbrod jumper. The Indians finished the first half with a 34-22 advantage. Waeghe was the first half star scoring 14 points, while Truckenbrod, Marian leading scorer this season was held to only seven. Marengo, which seemed to have a tendance to lose big leads throughout the season, came on strong in the second half, led this time by the shooting of Dennis Hansen. The Hurricanes found themselves trailing by 20 points early in the third period, 46-26, finally ending the period down 60-43. . "When you're down by 20, it's pretty hard to play catch up," Rokus said. But catch 00VR8S -- Marian Central and North Boone urcra fraqaently got Into each other's way In Thursday jthts Regional semi-final at Marian. Hurricane guard Mike iatka (light Jersey left) plows over the Vikings' Tom prrts (an the floor) after Ashing the hall off to teammate ive Rtekert who attempted the layup. Rickert, in turn, knocked down another North Boone player. So who was whistled for the foul? Why Morris of course who was called for blocking on Sabatka's drive. Marian won the contest 73-55, but lost the Regional title game 85-65 to SHARK champion Marengo the following night. / STAFF PHOTO -- CARL MOESCHE Skyhawk Girls Lose To Marengo 62-57 JOHNSBURG - Tiunmi Dunker poured in 35 points to lead Marengo to a 62-57 win over boat Johnsbura in a run- and-gun girls basketball game Thursday night. The Skyhawks came back in the second quarter to take a 31-30 lead, but the uncanny shooting of Dunker in the second half proved to be too much to handle. The Indians outscord the Skyhawks 17-11 in the third quarter foriattfMS lead, and maintained|l|NNk five-point lead as the game ended. Dunker finished with 14 field goals and 7-of-8 from the free throw line for her 35 points. Sue Dehn led ,the Skyhawks with 25 points, and both Cheri Kofler and Theresa Hauck added 14, but the locals were victimized by fouls as both Dehn and Kofler played much of the fourth quarter with four each. "I think the fouls really hurt us," said Johnsburg coach Sharal Koenigseder. "We weren't really as aggressive as we would've been and our defense suf- feretfe-Ve had a tough time stopplrfgOunker anyway. It seems that everyting she' threw up was going in." HUNTER COUNTRY CLUB up is what the Hurricanes tried. Marian closed the gap to 60-47 on a pair of Trucken brod field goals, but then Barry signaled for a time out. . "That was the turning point if there was one," said Rokus. "He saw the momentum had changed so he called time." The strategy had worked as the Indians regained their momentum and built up a 74- 51 lead. By then it was too late for Mariafi to come back. Waeghe finished with 22 points, while Hansen added 21, including 16 in the second half. Lane Samuelson added 14 for the Indians and Bob Stuntz had 10. Marian's Truckenbrod led all scorers with 24 points, while Dave Rickert added 12 and Chuck Hartlieb had 10. In it's regional semi final. 73-55 victory over North Boone, Truckenbrod poured in 30 points and Mike Sabatka had 20 to lead Marian. The occasion also marked the eighth time this season that Truckenbrod had netted 30 or more points in a game. Marian jumped out to a 20- 8 first quarter lead, and led 40-23 at intermission. The Hurricanes continued to dominate the Vikings in the second half opening up a 29-point lead with 3:46 remaining in the qontest.
