For a mediocre team, here's the opportunity to redee em itself, while a winning team pats its reputation on the line. Three teams in tMs area, namely McHenry, Johnsburg, and Marian Central, will ffcce this do-or-dte situation Monday also. Here's a preview of these three tesms: McHenry Lady Warriors McHenry's riris. coached by Pat Wirtx, will be hosting their own Class AA Regional this year and it won't be an easy one. Fox Valley conference champion Crystal Lake South is the Lady Warriors opponent at t:S0 p.m.. while the 8:00 p.m. contest will festure second place Crystal Lake Central against last plsff* Woodstock. McHenry has failed to beat South in two attempts this season, but then so has almost everybody else. The league champion Gators boast a 13-1 record in the FVC with their only loss being to the second place Tigers. South stands 18-4 overall. The Gators defeated the Warriors 6S-41 at South and 70-49 at Buckner gym during the regular season meetings. "They're the best outside shooting team in the conference, said Wirtz. offense and an all-around heady floor game. The sophomore netted her season high of 19 points in the same game that Dehn had 31. Expected to All out the remaining spots in the starting lineup are Joan Pierce and Janice Schmitt "If we stay healthy and play with our heads up, we'll do fine in the tournament," said Johnsburg coach Sharal the average, Scherman tallied 10 points In the first McHenry game and poured in 33 in the second. With one conference game remaining, she has a comfortable 254-196 scoring lead over Crown's Jean Heger. Junior guard Greta Larson contests led the Lady Warriors in both IS and 11 points, respectively. Larsen is pavidus, Terry With Thursday's game at Hononesah to play, the Skyhawks are 4-3 in the SHARK conference ana 10-8 overall. The Johnsburg-Hebron contest begins at 8:00 p.m. following the 8:30 battle between Harvard and North Boone. The two winners advance to the semi-finals on Wednesday. Marian Central Hurricanes Marian Central's girls, idle since their 56-53 defeat against Johnsburg on February 18, will play at Marengo on Thursday before beginning their own Regional competition. The Hurricanes have a first round bye ana will not play until Wednesday when they oppose the Harvard-North Boone champion at 6:30 p.m. The Regional championship game is slated for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 11. Marian Central is led by the all-around play of senior guard Jackie Weber (McHenry) and senior forward Debbie Liggett (Wonder Lake). After missing most of her senior year of volleyball due to injury, Weber nas returned to form and doesnt appear to have lost a step. Weber triggers the Hurricane fast break and is a deadly outside shooter. Liggett has been one of Marian's best inside players, scoring consistently in double figures, and handling the ined by Karen Karpa Koerber, and either Sue Smith or Cissy Pinkstaff in the starting lineup. Karpavicius ana 1 and rebounding leaders for the Lady Warriors all season, Bhime have consistently been the scoring on, witn Karpavicius having the individual high point total of 30. McHenry is coming off an 61-33 loss at Antioch Wednesday night to put its overall record at 7-14. In the FVC, (not including Thursday night's game) Wirtz's team stands 6-7. Winners of Monday's opening round will meet on Thursday, March 11 at 7:00 p.m. for the Regional championship. Johnsburg Skyhawks The Johnsburg girls will travel to Marian Central for their Class A Regional Just as the Sky hawk boys did, but their opening round task should be easier. While the boys were eliminated in the first round by eventual Regional champion Marengo, the girls take on the Hebron Green Giants, a team they nave already soundly beaten twice. In its own varsity tournament, Johnsburg defeated an and later won by a sailors Sue Dehn and Cheri Kofler, and sophomore Theresa Hauck who do the bulk of the scoring. Dehn has led the team in the last four games which include two 30-piu8 efforts to her credit. Her 31 points against Elgin- St. Edward Tuesday night was her season high. Returning to the lineup after a leg injury, Kofler has recovered well as her opponents will attest to. The Skyhawk center has returned to double digit scoring and has contributed greatly to the Skyhawk running game with her tenacious rebounding. Hauck has added an outside shooting touch to the Johnsburg (me consistently in double figures rebounding chores of a taller player. The other probable starters include Beth Penza at forward, Nancy Walsh at guard, and Holly Ryan at center. The Hurricanes, coached by Mary Stoner and Bud Grover, are 5-2 in the SHARK (with an away game at Marengo on Thursday) and stand 10-7 overall. While the Sequoit girls had little trouble with the Lady Warriors, the referees ap peared to be more interested in ending the girl's game so they could watch the boy's Regional game in a neigh boring gym, according to Lady Warriors coach Pat Wirtz. He cited the following as examples of their haste: -- Before the game started, the referees sliced eight minutes off the 20-minute warm-up clock without consulting either coach, Wirtz commented. -- Both Antioch and McHenry were assessed technical fouls for not coming out of their time-out huddles promptly enough. In common practice, Wirtz said, the referee will usually approach a huddle and give prior warning that the players must immediately return to the court. No such warnings were given. -- As the Lady Warriors and the noticeably taller Sequoit girls each battered each other under the boards, the McHenry coach said the referees called only two fouls on each team in the first half. In the second half, each team was whistled for only seven fouls giving each team a total of nine, Wirtz pointed out. -- Antioch star Tracey Manuel surpassed a school scoring record in the fourth quarter when she went over the 1,500 point mark, but the referee's refused to halt the game to allow her ac complishment to be recognized, he said. -- Manuel was also the only Sequoit that went to the free throw line where she sank 11- of-14 charity tosses. -- The referees left in such a hurry that they didn't sign the official scorebook in dicating the game they had worked, Wirtz noted. With Manuel scoring 27 points in quest of the scoring record, Antioch romped past McHenry leading 12-2 at the end of the first period and 24- 6 at intermission. The Lady Warriors out- scored the Sequoits 17-15 in the third quarto*, but the hosts exploded for 22 fourth quarter points to win han dily. Renee Prell followed Manuel in scoring with 10 points. Karen Karpavicius led McHenry with 15 points, all in the second half, while . ****»> «r H Terry Blumei The Lady Warriors will close out their regular season schedule on Thur sday when they host Jacobs.
