His name doesn't sound Irish, but Ron Svoboda is looking forward to the day. At least, he reminded me. So did Pat Ello. Now, I See Anne Sowers (a Sullivan girl) lists March 17 in her Wonder Lake news as "Earl Walsh Day," better known as St. Patrick's Day. Suppose Arnold St. Joseph Rauen will be the next to remind me. Met Leo Heimer's nephew, John Hoffman, and soon learned he is a dyed-in-the- wool White Sox fan. He is going down to Sarasota to watch the team and predicts they will win the Western Division. Never a doubt. There is a desperate at tempt being made to find a picture of the old band shell that stood so long in the city park Somebody must have one. That good Samaritan running a snow blower up and down the east side of Riverside Drive was none other than Dorothy Noonan. Certain business people in the block are trying to figure out a way to repay her. When somebody says "You look the same as you did 30 years ago", I wonder if I did look so old 30 years ago or if the guy is a fit subject for an eye doctor. A girl phoned after reading about Lawrence Welk's retirement in this , column and said her grand ma was concerned. She thought Lawrence died. Nope The 01' Boy is the liveliest corpse we have seen in sometime. Marie Yegge wonders how Lawrence can retire after watching the Sunday night program-and all those pretty girls kissing him. She wondered if I would retire under such cir cumstances. I'm not jealous. In fact, I don't do badly as anybody in Bimbo's will testify. It was this way. My golf day partner, Barb Weber, and I met after not seeing each other for tnany moons. Told you we like to have friends come a-callin' at our house. A visit from Virginia Williams brought joy. She brought a whole pack of old pictures. That's right down our alley. There are many ads telling about litte pills that will make you sleep. What I am looking for is one that will keep me awake. Looking through a little graduation book, purchased the last day of high school, I ran into a note written by one of my favorite teachers, Miss Pryor. "If I ever frowned, it was only to hide the smile." OFT HEARD: Birds of a feather flock together. Old flames are easily kindled. Love your neighbor, but don't tear down your hedge. -Ben Franklin • • • • If you're in good health, you're one of the luckiest among your fellow citizens. "A spiritual feast" is the description given by members of the Woodstock congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses of a two-day convention held March 6,7 at their Janesville, Wis., assembly hall. The 70 members attended a program developed around the theme, "Become steadfast, unmoveable, always having plenty to do in the work of the Lord", based on 1 Corinthians 15:58. all were encouraged to examine their own life course and determine where im provements might be made. A portion of the convention program adding further detail to the overall theme was titled, "Blamelessly Observing God's Com mandments". The questions were then asked, "Do we view this world as God Does?" and "Are you irreprehensible?" On Sunday, March 7, D.D. Holman, district supervisor of Jehovah's Witnesses in the midwest, gave an hour address to the 1,5(0 at tending on the subject, "Surviving a Generation of Darkness". Closing the program Sunday evening, Mr. Holman encouraged the attendees to "Go on Walking in the Increasing Light". "Encouraged now toward an increasing part in our Christian ministry", said local Presiding Elder John Maher, "the families of Jehovah's Witnesses in our community will be making a special effort to call per sonally at our neighbors' homes. Our goal will be to stimulate interest in per sonal home Bible study." SPBC students from seven different states join to emphasize the theme of Jesus Christ's return to earth. The hour long program is divided into four segments of music interspersed with drama: the advent of Christ, preparing for His return, the Christian's hope because of the Second Coming, and a finale calling for a response. Short dramatic pieces called vignettes give con tinuity to the program. Dwight Gardstrom, musical director of the groups, says, "The vignettes are a dramatic portrayal of things such as apathy, concern, and various other aspects of how people look at the Second Coming. Practice began for His Workmanship last fall, and the group continues to practice three to six hours a week. Including a twelve day spring tour through South and North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and northern Minnesota, His Work manship will have per formed at about 30 concerts.
