Any time you get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, you should think of the dangers involved and your responsibility toward safe driving. If you drive in stop-and-go rush hour traffic to work and back daily, you might think these are the most dangerous times of the day to be operating your vehicle. But if you do, you're only half right. Statistics show that drivers should be par ticularly alert and careful between 5 and9 p.m. and 2 to 5 a.m., the peak times for fatal accidents. Late afternoon and early evening hours are especially hazardous during dark winter months, for both motorists and pedestrians. Snow and feezing rain are added risks. The high fatality rate during early morning hours is caused primarily by drinking and sleepy drivers. Light traffic on streets and roads encourages unsafe These hours are 50 percent more dangerous during winter months. Morning rush hour traffic between 7 and 10 is not as perilous because drivers are more rested and visibility is better.
