After all, there's a massive market out there, if the TV ratings are accurate, that might just eat it up. Think of the possibilities. Powdered protein packaged in containers with a mean- but-lean-looking J.R. Ewing on the label. Or perhaps a strict daily regimen of caviar, champagne and pinto beans. Or better yet, all the sagebrush you can eat-and whenever you want it. Ridiculous? No more so than half a dozen other fad diets that have been in the limelight lately. And probably about as effective. That's not to imply that you won't lose weight on some of these diets. You might indeed. But you might also pay dearly for it with your health. Perhaps even with your life. Take, for instance, the liquid protein diets that were in vogue during the'70s. Though these diets helped some persons to drop pounds, they also may have caused others to drop dead- from heart attacks. Many of these victims had no previous history of heart problems. Another fad diet currently making the circuit has also put a few of its followers in the hospital with heart problems. The doctor for one of these persons, reports Medical World News, said of his patient: "If she had remained on the diet another week, she could have died". How do you tell a fad diet from a safe, effective one? It's simple. Just remember these three ways they differ: - The fad diet promises you a "quick and easy" means of losing weight. The safe, effective diet reminds you that losing weight is a slow, steady process that takes time and discipline. - The fad diet is based on one to several "miracle" foods or on a "completely nutritious" powder or potion. The safe, effective diet includes a variety of foods from the four basic food groups-milk, meat, fruits and vegetables, and grains. - The fad diet tells you not to worry about "bother- Among recent births recorded at Memorial hospital for McHenry county, Woodstock was the March 15 birth of a boy to Mr. and Mrs. Brian Antonou of McHenry. Teeth are bones--but harder than most of the other bones in the body. AT PHOTO FORUM Well, seems like problems multiply, as th' days go by. It's a goin't' take a whole lot o' faith an' courage t' plow through th' wilderness o' uncertainty, th' not a knowin' which way t' turn. This granny went through it all, an' folks couldn't turn t' federal aid, in those days, cause therewa'n't any. Local gf-oups, churches, an' th' Salvation Army helped those in dire distress. A body couldn't buy a job, in those days either. Folks had t' do menial work, of all kinds, an' th' gover'ment established th' WPA. Me own father, at age 60, an' me brother, too, worked on that. Wi' a fast failin' young husband, an' two tiny tots, this ol' lady knows how it was, an' hard times o' this day may be frightenin' but me thinks a come-down f'r a lot o' folks seems on th' agenda, an' it jist might be good f'r a lot o' those who abhor menial labor, t' git a taste o' it. Some don't know what a hard day's work feels like. It's amazin't' us elders, t' hear about those in prisons, refusin' t' work f'r their keep. Wonder why they think th' taxpayers should be r'sponsible f'r 'em. Maybe they ne'er learned that one must live wi'in th' letter o' th' law, in order t' keep out o' trouble, in th' first place. Now, we git back t' th' bringin' up o' th' young, me favorite subject. Passivity, th' order o' th' day, these past few years, may be r'sponsible f r our over-filled prisons, b'cause o' laxity o' some parents, an' also, th' reason f'r th' reluctance t' accept menial labor. When th' tree grows out o' line, wi' th' rest o' th' forest, it's too late t' train it after it's reached full develop ment. Th' time t' guide a life, t' reach a happy maturity, b'gins wi' its first breath. Parents seem t' have accepted th' word o' anyone, perfessin' t' have un- derstandin' o' th' hows an' wherefores o' bringin' up th' young, an' a good many mamas 'n papas ha' taken th' easy way out, seems t' us, who adopted th' ol' fashioned methods. A lookin' back, at th' kind o' people, turned out by parents who taught th' young how t' live in observin' th' rules o' th' household, it certainly paid big dividends. late, b'fore th' tree shaped, an' too strong change.
